Most of Zürich's sights lie within the compact area either side of the River Limmat, between the Hauptbahnhof and Lake Zürich. The churches and burgher houses of the Old Town are clustered here, as are the elegant shops along Bahnhofstrasse. The Baroque Rathaus (Town Hall) and Zürich's most impressive churches – the Grossmünster, Fraumünster and the city's oldest, St Peterskirche (its clock face is the largest in Europe) – all lie within a short distance of the River Limmat, near to where it opens onto the lake.

Using a ZürichCard

Zurich Card In keeping with other European capitals, Zürich offers a tourist card to visitors which, as well as including access to transport services of Zürich Public Transport in the greater Zürich area (airport, city, Üetliberg and lower Lake Zürich area), offers free admission to over 40 museums. In addition, you'll receive reduced admission to the Zoo Zürich, a complimentary welcome drink in over 20 restaurants, plus a number of other discounts - for example 20% car rental discount or free vehicle upgrade.

Valid for 24 or 72 hours (priced at 15 CHF and 30 CHF respectively), all means of public transport in the greater Zürich area are available to car holders, including train, bus, tram, boat, or funicular. The card is available from:

(i) the Tourist Service at Zürich Main Railway Station (Hauptbahnhof), Zürcher Schifffahrtsgesellschaft at Bürkliplatz and hotels in Zürich and the surrounding area.

(ii) VBZ ticket offices at: Zürich Main Railway Station, Albisriederplatz, Bellevue, Central, Goldbrunnenplatz, Limmatplatz, Oerlikon, Paradeplatz, Schwamendingen

and the following train stations:

Adliswil, Dietikon, Dübendorf, Kloten, Küsnacht ZH, Langnau-Gattikon, Regensdorf-Watt, Rümlang, Schlieren, Schwerzenbach, Uster, Wallisellen, Thalwil, Zürich Airport, Zürich Altstetten, Zürich Enge, Zürich Oerlikon, Zürich Stadelhofen
