With a company mission to "strive for excellence" Grieder is widely considered to be one of the city's finest stores. A minimalist, contemporary atmosphere pervades throughout, with top-notch designer clothing for both men and women encompassing a variety of styles (indeed it's one of the best places in Zürich to gauge the very latest fashion trends). Here, you'll also find here a beautiful selection of silk scarves, accessories from the likes of Gucci, Bottega Chanel and Pucci, plus impressive cosmetics and home furnishings departments. Best of all is the Griederbar - a restaurant with terrace attached where you can relax and enjoy creative cooking after splashing out with the plastic!

Globus

Globus StoreGlobus Zürich City, Schweizergasse 11, CH-8001 Zürich, Tel: +41 (0) 44 226 6060, Fax: +41 (0) 44 226 6088, Website: www.globus.ch, Open: 9am-8pm Mon-Fri, 9am-5pm Sat (opening hours may vary according to national holidays), Tram 6, 7, 11, 13 to << Bahnhofstrasse/HB >>
Occupying a prominent position adjacent to Bahhofstrasse, the Globus department store is a modern, albeit non-descript building spread over four floors. As one of Switzerland's leading retail brands (with a presence in every large Swiss city), it boasts an impressive range of men's and ladies wear, along with a beautifully laid out home furnishings department and (in the basement) one of the best food halls in Switzerland. More recently, a second store - Globus am Bellevue - has opened on Theaterstrasse, boasting a quality in-house restaurant, flower shop, take-away delicatessen and home furnishings department.

Jelmoli - The House of Brands

Jelmoli Seidengasse 1, CH-8001 Zürich, Tel: +41 (0) 44 220 4411, Fax: +41 (0) 44 220 4400, Website: www.jelmoli.ch, E-Mail: info@jelmoli.ch, Opening hours for Jelmoli Warenhaus: Mon-Fri 9am-8pm and Sat 9am-5pm, Gourmet Factory: Mon-Fri 9am-8pm and Sat 9am-5pm, Holmes Place (in-store health club): Mon-Wed 6.30am-10.30pm, Thu 6:30am-10pm, Fri 6.30am-9pm and Sat/Sun 9am-8pm, Tram 6, 7, 11 or 13 to << Bahnhofstrasse/HB >> or << Rennweg >>
In business since 1833, the Jelmoli "warenhaus" is a shop-in-shop concept with over 1,000 brands and 250,000 items for sale, spread over five floors. Competing directly against Globus, the store is equally upmarket with a Gourmet Factory take-away, charcuterie and delicatessen area, Asian, Middle-Eastern and Italian inspired eateries, plus electrical, sports, household and home furnishings departments. Of course, there's a huge selection of men's and ladies wear too, along with a first-rate lingerie department (featuring a Beldona shop). On Jemoli's top floor, there's a Holmes Place health club, plus sauna, spa, meditation, massage and fitness areas. All in all, a very fine store and one well-worth visiting.

Manor

Bahnhofstrasse 75, CH-8001 Zürich, Tel: +41 (0) 44 229 5699, Fax: +41 (0) 44 229 5698, Website: www.manor.ch, Open: Mon-Fri 9am-8pm, Sat 9am-5pm, Tram 6, 7, 11 or 13 to << Bahnhofstrasse/HB >> or << Rennweg >>
Although considered less upmarket than Globus or Jelmoli, Manor remains an impressive store with affordable clothing ranges, plus well-designed perfume and sports departments. Comprising of five floors, you'll find sections devoted to leatherwear, souvenirs, electrical equipment and homewares, while an in-store take-away and photo processing are among the other services on offer.

Max Ditting

Max DittingRennweg 35, CH-8001 Zürich, Tel: +41 (0) 1 219 6070, Fax: 219 6072, Website: www.ditting.ch, E-mail: info@ditting.ch, Open: Mon-Fri 9am-6.30pm and Sat 9am-5pm, Tram 6, 7, 11 or 13 to << Rennweg >>
With core values of "real quality is a longer lasting trend" and "offer less but the right things", Max Ditting has been in business for over 100 years and stocks everything you'll need by way of housewares. The company's store on Rennweg is a thoroughly modern and inviting affair, with departments devoted to fine tableware (including Herend, Rosenthal and Villeroy and Boch), glassware from Riedel and Moser, plus kitchenware and pots from Fissler. In addition, you'll find plenty of "must have" kitchen gadgets, ultra-stylish coffee making machines and quality, long lasting Wusthof knives. Recommended.

Modissa

Bahnhofstrasse 74, CH-8001 Zürich, Tel: +41 (0)  44, 217 7474, Fax: +41 (0) 44 217 7475, Website: www.modissa.ch, Open: Mon-Fr 9am-8pm, Sat 9am-5pm, Tram 6, 7, 11 or 13 to << Bahnhofstrasse/HB >> or << Rennweg >>

RailCity/Shopville

RailCity at Zurich HBCorrespondence address: Schweizerische Bundesbahnen SBB, RailCity Zürich, Immobilien, Museumstrasse 7, Postfach, 8023 Zürich, Website: www.railcity.ch (German only), Tram 3, 10, 14 and Bus 31 to << Bahnhofplatz/HB >> or Tram 4, 11, 13, 14 and Bus 46 to << Bahnhofquai/HB >>
Owing to a quirky loophole in Swiss law, stations belonging to the country's federal railway network (SBB) have, over the last few years, been turned into what are essentially large-scale shopping centres. This is because each station is allowed to establish ancillary services to "meet the requirements" of rail users. And, because the Swiss are some of the most demanding (and discerning) travellers in Europe, they've ended up with a more shops at Zurich Hauptbahnhof than you can shake a stick at! In fact, with a level of choice and convenience similar to that of an airport, shops at RailCity/Shopville also benefit from early opening and late closing hours (with some Sunday shopping thrown in for good measure). The company's website also carries a useful list of shops and their locations, making it easy to plan a trip in advance.

Zurich Markets

Flower, Food and Fruit/Vegetable Markets

On Tuesdays and Fridays (6.30am-11am) you'll find food and flower markets at Helvetiaplatz, Milchbuck and Bürkliplatz, while similar events take place at Altstetten, Oerlikon (Marktplatz) and Rathausbrücke (on Wednesdays and Saturdays, 6am-midday).

At each, you'll find a wide selection of meat, fish, baked and speciality items (including some rather good local cheeses), along with an excellent selection of bio-products, fruits, home-made jams and vegetables.

In our opinion, pick of the bunch is the market at Oerlikon. Just a short hop from Zürich Hauptbahnhof, the suburb's market square is located adjacent to the Swiss'otel. Being a thoroughly laid-back and none too crowded affair, it's perfect for some leisurely, albeit potentially pricey, Saturday morning shopping.

To find out more on the above markets visit: www.zuercher-maerkte.ch (although German language only, it's easy to make sense of what's available and when).

Bürkliplatz

Tram: 2, 5, 8, 9, 11 or Bus 161, 165 to << Bürkliplatz >>
In addition to the flower/food market which takes place here on Tuesdays and Fridays, you'll also find a Saturday flea market where locals and tourists alike flock to find a bargain or two.

Aside from being amazed by what Zurchers throw out, you can purchase everything from bargain clothing and books, to t-shirts, jewellery, bric-a-brac, pots, pans and local handicrafts. From May-Dec 9am-2pm (although longer hours are common).

Rosenhof Markt

Rosenhof MarktRosenhof, CH-8001 Zürich, Website: www.rosenhof.ch, E-mail: info@rosenhof.ch, Open: Mar-Dec Thu 10am-8pm and Sat 10am-5pm, Tram 4 or 15 to << Rathaus >> or << Rudolfbrun Brücke >>
Slap bang in the middle of the city's Old Town you'll find the Rosenhof Markt which, from March until December, offers a pleasant and unique atmosphere in which to browse for local artworks, hand-made items and fashionable clothing. It's certainly a colourful, rewarding experience, with Swiss handicraft stalls standing alongside those with gemstones, leatherware, candles, pottery and antiques. Combined with a light lunch from one of several food stalls, it all makes for a relaxing hour or so in which to explore this small square.
