Sydney Shopping Malls Introduction

Broadway Shopping Centre

As a landmark building, the Broadway once served as the city's famous Grace Bros department store, before being renovated in 1998 to provide a start-of-the-art retail and cinema complex. Retaining its historical associations, the building's iconic clock towers and globes now serve as an easily recognizable focal point, whilst inside you'll find one of the best selections of shops in town. Along with major retailers such as Dymocks (books), Coles Supermarkets and K-mart (homewares, electrical, toys), you'll also find a Hoyt's multiplex cinema and fashion stores such as Giordano, Lonsdale, Modus Vivendi and Sportsgirl.

Harbourside Darling Harbour

Conveniently located just a short distance from Sydney's CBD (and with monorail stations at both the north and south entrances), Harbourside boasts a good collection of stores, restaurants, cafes and bars, all set on the waters edge at Darling Harbour.

Having recently undergone a no expense spared refurbishment (to the tune of A$60 million), you'll find gift stores that include Weiss Art and Best Real Australian, while expats will feel at home with The British Lolly Shop. Fashions come courtesy of stores like Cotton On and Colorado, while fine dining is found here in the form of Zaaffran and Jordon's Seafood Restaurant.

Pitt Street Mall

As a shopping precinct within Sydney's CBD, the Pitt Street Mall houses eight retail centres within an area of two city blocks. As well as 600 specialty stores, you'll find Glasshouse (with men's and women's fashions), the 60 store Imperial Arcade and the Mid City Centre at 197 Pitt Street, which boasts four shopping levels.

Opposite the Hilton Hotel stands the Piccadilly Centre which, among its wide-range of outlets, features a silk shop, optometrist and bridal centre, while Sydney Central Plaza has a collection of over 100 shops including Rhodes and Beckett (fine Egyptian cotton shirts), Decjuba and Mimco.

Nearby, the Victorian Strand Arcade on George Street is a stylish, upscale collection of shops, being home to many of Australia's top designers, as well as featuring antiques, jewellery and gift shops, while the Westfield Centrepoint found on the corner of Pitt and Market Streets is a large mall of over 150 stores.

Elsewhere, the slick minimalist design of the Galeries Victoria plays host to four levels of shops, including Eva Hannah Glass, JB Hi-Fi and Flight Centre, while in Castlereagh Street you'll find the fashion led MLC Centre. Finally, two block east of Castlereagh lies the art-deco influenced Chifley Plaza and Tower (found on the square of the same name), while south on Phillip Street you'll find No. 1 Martin Place - a beautifully restored heritage listed building which offers a combination of eateries, food to go and cheese/wine cellars.

Queen Victoria Building

Dedicated to the long-reigning monarch, the Queen Victoria Building was designed in a Romanesque style by George McRae in 1898. Standing on the site of the former Sydney markets, it makes for a wonderful sightseeing opportunity, as well as first-rate shopping experience. Indeed, features such as the central dome and ornate plasterwork were specially planned so as to provide out-of-work skilled craftsmen, including stonemasons and stained window artists, with jobs during a time of depression. Today, the building houses an upscale range of boutiques and designer outlets, including famous names such as Esprit, Crabtree & Evelyn, Lush, Joe Bananas, Adidas, Polo Ralph Lauren and Bally.

Westfield Bondi Junction

With many a visitor to Bondi Beach also seeking out this sprawling modern mall, Westfield Bondi Junction comprises of over 400 shops, along with bars, restaurants and the Great Union Cinema (housing 11 state-of-the art screens). As well as branches of Borders and EzyDVD, you'll find an Everywhere Internet store, plus popular fashion names such as Guess? Jeans, Hugo Boss, Jag, Jeans West, Lonsdale London and French Connection.

World Square

As a mixed development of retail, leisure and office space, World Square is found in the city's CBD and provides over 90 stores spanning three levels of an entire city block.

As well as fashion, lifestyle/health and beauty stores, including the likes of Cotton On, Sony Central and Toni & Guy, you'll find a wide-range of restaurants and bars, food to go and the central area's largest Coles Supermarket. And, with car parking for 550 vehicles (at a flat rate fee of A$12 at weekends), a visit to World Square can also be combined with a sightseeing trip to nearby Darling Harbour.
