Sydney Coach Travel - Point to Point Bus Services, Backpacker Coaches, Tours, Tickets and Information

For backpackers, Australia has a wide-range of specialist bus services, with the very best allowing travellers to hop on/hop off en-route, thus making them ideal for detours and adventures off the beaten track. Of course, express coaches are useful for point to point travel, though some buses (which masquerade as backpacker friendly) end up simply providing tours.

Greyhound Australia
As the country's only national coach company, Greyhound's red liveried buses are a common sight on the highways in and around Sydney. As well as point to point (express) tickets, the company offers a pre-set Aussie Pass, along with kilometre driven passes (from 2,000km right up to 20,000km). First stop, however, should the company's specials page which features one-off and seasonal deals. Bookings can be made via www.greyhound.com.au, or by calling Greyhound's national call centre on 13 14 99 (within Australia) or +617 4690 9950 (International).

Oz Experience
Probably Australia's most well-known backpacker bus operator is Oz Experience. As well as flexible ticketing, the company include guided walks and optional activities on many routes, with their experience focusing on the popular East Coast of Australia between Sydney and Cairns (though National Passes are available for most of Australia). Value for money is also a prime objective, whilst their network is flexible enough to allow travel when and where you want (as well as providing the opportunity to meet lots of like-minded travellers en-route).

The only drawback with Oz Experience is the bewildering number of travel passes on offer. Certainly, as there are so many options, we recommend that you check their website to check what pass combinations best suit you. Full pricing and itinerary details are located on their pages.

Autopia Tours
As a company handling small groups, Autopia offer a good value tour from Melbourne to Sydney (as well as the other way round) which includes an experienced guide, some meals, dorm accommodation and national park entry fees. Autopia's website also features a "specials" page, which is well-worth checking out for seasonal deals.

Wayward Bus
Although Wayward Bus is actually a touring company, we've included it here because of their Sydney to Melbourne via The Alps itinerary. The four day trip takes in the country's capital Canberra, The Monaro Tablelands, a walk on the Main Range of Australia's Alps, the legendary Snowy River, The Gippsland Lakes and Wilsons Promontory.

Wildlife Tours
Wildlife Tours offer all the advantages of a hop on/hop off service combined with experienced tour guides and smaller vehicles to provide a more personalised tour experience. As well as Melbourne-Sydney, you'll find tours from Melbourne to the Grampians and the Great Ocean Road in Victoria.

Wonderbus Tours
Using relatively small Toyota and Mitsubishi vehicles (21 seater + 24 seaters), Wonderbus offer a combined tour of the Blue Mountains, Sydney's oldest winery, the Parramatta River and, to finish off the day, a relaxing Sydney Harbour cruise. En-route to the Blue Mountains you'll also experience the thrills of an Australian wildlife park, followed by a meandering walk down through a temperate rainforest. With pick-up points around Sydney, the most convenient are likely to be at Circular Quay, or Murray St. at Darling Harbour.
