Gambra

Černínská 5, Hradčany, Praha 1, Tel: +420 220 514 527, Website: www.illumin.co.uk, Tram 22/23, Open: Mar-Oct noon-6pm Wed-Sun, Nov-Feb noon-5.30pm Sat/Sun, Closed all other days, Show Map
Owned by the surrealist animator Jan Švankmajer, Gambra is, without doubt, one of Prague's most interesting galleries. Chock full of sculptures, ceramics and lithographs by both Jan and his wife Eva, the couple's work continues the tradition of Prague's well-established surrealist movement (which has existed in the city since the 1920s). Including works by Karel Baron and Eva Medková, the gallery also carries books, videos, periodicals and prints relevant to the genre. Recommended.

House of the Stone Bell (Dům U kamenného zvonu)

Staromēstké náměstí 13, Staré Mēsto, Praha 1, Tel: +420 224 827 526, Metro: Staroměstská, Tram 17, 18, Open: 10am-6pm Tue-Sun, closed Mon, Show Map
Belonging to the City Gallery Prague, the Stone Bell House contains three floors of temporary exhibition space, with quarterly displays of work by young and established Czech/Slovak artists. Boasting a lovely Gothic façade, the building is ideally situated near the Old Town Square, giving those on the tourist trail a chance to see first-rate local art too.

Kinský Palace (Palác Kinských)

Staromēstké náměstí 12, Staré Mēsto, Praha 1, Tel: +420 224 810 758, Website: www.ngprague.cz, Metro: Staroměstská, Tram 17, 18, Open: 10am-6pm Tue-Sun, closed Mon, Show Map
The ornate surroundings of the Baroque Kinský Palace provide an ideal backdrop in which to enjoy the Prague National Gallery's sizeable collection of prints and drawings from the middle ages. Shown alongside landscape and miniature works from artists such as Reiner, Gauguin, Kupka and Chittussi, the palace also houses some 20th century exhibits which, when combined with a tour of Stone Bell House (see above), make for a thoroughly rewarding visit.

Prague Castle Riding School (Jízdárna Pražského hradu)

U Prašného mostu 55, Praha 1, Hrad čany, Tel: +420 224 373 232, Metro: Malostranská, Tram 22, 23, Open: 10am-6pm Tue-Sun, closed Mon, Show Map
Running along U Prašného mostu, the Riding School - which dates back the late 17th century - is now used as the National Gallery's principal exhibition space (together with the Wallenstein Gallery below) with temporary displays of Italian art and sculpture.

Prague House of Photography (Pražský dům fotografie)

Haštalská 1, Praha 1, Staré Mēsto, Tel: +420 224 810 779, E-mail: php@ecn.cz, Website: www.php-gallery.cz, Metro: Náměstí Republiky, Tram 5, 8, 14, Open: 11am-6pm daily, Show Map
With up to ten exhibitions per year, the PHP showcases talent from both the Czech Republic and international stage, specializing in contemporary photography, workshops and art sales. Often intriguing, but never dull, the House (although based at the above address) is exhibiting at temporary locations in Prague due to water damage caused by the devastating floods that hit the city last year.

Wallenstein Gallery (Valdštejnská jízdárna)

Valdštejnská at Klárov, Praha 1, Malá Strana, Metro: Malostranská, Tram 12, 18, 22, 23, Open: 10am-6pm Tue-Sun, closed Mon, Show Map
Consistently impressive, the Wallenstein Gallery's exhibitions range from the bizarre and challenging (read the Tvrdohlavi group) to turn-of the-20th century romanticists such as Max Švabinský. Genuinely thought-provoking and always worth a visit. Recommended.
