Prague Department Stores

The typically Czech 'White Swan' department stores continue to struggle on against the influx of
big brand western competitors, selling a wide array of locally produced goods and cheap Asian
imports.
The company's two Prague stores are:-

Brits in particular may wish to pay a visit to the company's Prague store now it's no longer a
fixture on the UK high street (C & A withdrew its UK presence last year causing a frenzy of
last minute panic buying at it's flagship Oxford Street shop). Although slightly cramped at the
time of our visit, a fair number of shoppers (including many locals) were taking advantage of the
good value fashions on offer.

Fairly small branch of the well-known British retailer, although it does carry a decent range of
women's and men's fashion. Prices are expensive for locals, so the reasonably brisk trade we
witnessed suggests overseas visitors are the store's main client base.

Having invested heavily in Central Europe, Tesco - the British food retailer - is now reaping the
rewards in the Czech Republic, Hungary and Poland. The company's flagship Prague store is located
slap bang in the middle of town and sells a wide range of produce, much of it from local Czech
suppliers. Indeed, the quality of what's on offer, like in many of its central European stores is
often more impressive than what's available back home in the UK! The store stays open late during
the week and also opens on a Sunday too - useful if you're on a self-catering holiday or simply
head out for a picnic.

In common with many central European countries, Prague used to have a number of large, ornate
market halls. Whilst they are still thriving in capitals such as Budapest, in Prague, all but a few
remain. However, the Vinohradský Pavilon has been tastefully restored and is now home to a
number of shops, boutiques including many well-known high street outlets as well as local Czech
businesses and a Julius Meinl Supermarket. All in all, the Pavilon offers a pleasant place to
shop.
