The most lavish, well-equipped mall in Prague, with a range of shops that would do any store complex proud. Marks and Spencer, Malboro Classics, Kookai, Calvin Klein, Gant USA and Next are just a few of the fashion names, while every conceivable item from electronics to baby goods - can also be found. Recommended.

Occupying a prestigious site on Na Příkopě, Slovanský dům is another large complex offering a range of swish shops and boutiques as well as places to eat, drink and relax (should you need a break from shopping). Oh, and for moviegoers there's also a state-of-the-art, thumping loud, Ster City multiplex within the centre too!

Prague Department Stores

Bilá labut

Website: www.bilalabut.cz
The typically Czech 'White Swan' department stores continue to struggle on against the influx of big brand western competitors, selling a wide array of locally produced goods and cheap Asian imports.

The company's two Prague stores are:-

Na poříčí 23, Praha 1, Metro: Open: 9am-8pm Mon-Fri, 9am-6pm Sat, 10am-6pm Sun, Show Map
Spread over 8 floors, with departments for fashion, homewares, electronics, furniture and domestic items, the store's basement also houses a supermarket, plus a top floor restaurant.

Václavské nám 59, Praha 1, Nové Město, Metro: Můstek/Tram 3, 9, 14, 24, Open: 9am-8pm Mon-Fri, 9am-6pm Sat, 10am-6pm, 10am-6pm Sun, Supermarket open until 11pm daily
With a prominent location at the top of Wenceslas Square, the store offers an almost identical range of goods to its sister outlet. Also houses a basement supermarket which stays open to 11pm.

C&A

Václavské nám. 33, Praha 1, Nové Město, Tel: +420 222 811 318, Fax: +420 222 811 341, E-mail: info@c-a-a@iol.cz, Website: http://cs-cz-cw.retail-sc.com, Metro: Můstek, Open: 9:30am-8pm Mon-Sat, 10am-7pm Sun
Brits in particular may wish to pay a visit to the company's Prague store now it's no longer a fixture on the UK high street (C & A withdrew its UK presence last year causing a frenzy of last minute panic buying at it's flagship Oxford Street shop). Although slightly cramped at the time of our visit, a fair number of shoppers (including many locals) were taking advantage of the good value fashions on offer.

Kotva

Náměstí Republiky 8, Praha 1, Nové Město, Tel: +420 224 801 438, Fax: +420 224 801 401, E-Mail: info@od-kotva.cz, Website: www.od-kotva.cz, Metro: Náměsti Republiky, Open: 9am-8pm Mon-Fri, 9am-6pm Sat, 10am-6pm Sun
Large department store in Nové Město's busy Republic Square. As you'd expect, Kotva has departments for home furnishings, home electronics, fashion, cosmetics and china. Also with a Julius Meinl Supermarket too, Kotva restaurant and Internet access at café.com. Parking is available, should you arrive by car.

Krone

Václavské nám 21, Praha 1, Nové Město, Tel: +420 224 230 477, E-Mail: central@odkrone.cz, Website: www.odkrone.cz, Metro: Můstek, Open: 9am-8pm Mon-Fri, 9am-7pm Sat, 10am-6pm Sun
Another of Prague's department stores, Krone stocks more well-known brands such as Elizabeth Arden, Gucci, Max Factor, Bodum and Rösler, The fashion and cosmetic departments are usually of most interest.

Marks & Spencer

Na Příkopĕ 19, Praha 1, Nové Město, Metro: Můstek/Tram 3, 9, 14, 24, Open: 10am-19am Mon-Sat
Fairly small branch of the well-known British retailer, although it does carry a decent range of women's and men's fashion. Prices are expensive for locals, so the reasonably brisk trade we witnessed suggests overseas visitors are the store's main client base.

Tesco

Národní třída 26, Praha 1, Nové Město, Tel: +420 224 227 971, Website: www.tesco-shop.cz, Metro: Můstek/Tram 6, 9, 18, 22, Open: 8am-8pm Mon-Fri, 9am-6pm Sat, 10am-6pm Sun
Having invested heavily in Central Europe, Tesco - the British food retailer - is now reaping the rewards in the Czech Republic, Hungary and Poland. The company's flagship Prague store is located slap bang in the middle of town and sells a wide range of produce, much of it from local Czech suppliers. Indeed, the quality of what's on offer, like in many of its central European stores is often more impressive than what's available back home in the UK! The store stays open late during the week and also opens on a Sunday too - useful if you're on a self-catering holiday or simply head out for a picnic.

Prague Markets

Vinohradský Pavilon

Vinohradská 50, Praha 2, Tel: +420 222 097 111, Fax: +420 222 510 624, E-Mail: pavilon@pavilon.cz, Website: www.pavilon.cz, Metro: Náměsti Míru/Jiřího z Poděbrad, Open: 9:30am-9pm Mon-Sat, noon-8pm Sun
In common with many central European countries, Prague used to have a number of large, ornate market halls. Whilst they are still thriving in capitals such as Budapest, in Prague, all but a few remain. However, the Vinohradský Pavilon has been tastefully restored and is now home to a number of shops, boutiques including many well-known high street outlets as well as local Czech businesses and a Julius Meinl Supermarket. All in all, the Pavilon offers a pleasant place to shop.
