Prague Cafés - Cafés Located in Malá Strana

Bohemia Bagel

Újezd 16, Praha 1, Tel: +420 257 310 694, E-mail: info@bohemiabagel.cz, Website: www.bohemiabagel.cz, Open: 7am-midnight Mon-Fri, 8am-midnight Sat-Sun, No credit cards
Pleasant café-cum-restaurant offering all manner of bagel breakfasts plus soups, chilli, quiche, salads and desserts. With 15 Internet ready terminals, decent coffee, a good central location and welcoming atmosphere, the Bohemia comes highly recommended.

Malostranská Kavárná

Malostranské náměstí 5, Praha 1, Metro: Malostranská, Website: www.squarerestaurant.cz, Open: 8am-1am daily
Those with fond memories of Malostranská Kavárná will no doubt be disappointed to learn that the café, which was once a favoured haunt of Franz Kafka, has now been reopened as the Square Restaurant. A full review for this establishment will therefore shortly be added to our restaurant listings.

Vinoteka U Zlateho hada

Maltezske náměstí 3, Praha 1, Tel: +420 257 531 472, Metro: Malostranská, E-mail: interacta@mbox.vol.cz, Website: www.zlatyhad.cz, Open: Mon-Fri 10am-9pm, Sat-Sun 2pm-9pm, V, DC, EC, MC
Combined wine shop and café, with a good selection of coffees and teas, plus full English breakfasts. A welcome find.

Cafés Located in Staré Město

Café Franz Kafka

Široká 12/64, Praha 1, Metro: Staroměstská/Tram 17, 18, Open 10am-10pm daily, No credit cards
Charming coffeehouse in Josefov, with Kafka portraits inside and additional seating outside (along a fairly quiet street). Particularly atmospheric at night, the café is a  popular local haunt, although tables are nearly always available.

Café Milena

Staromĕstské náměstí 22, Praha 1, Tel: +420 221 632 602, Metro: Staroměstská/Tram 17, 18, Open: July-Aug 10am-8pm daily, Sept-June 10am-9pm daily, MC, V
With a plum location opposite the Old Town Square's Astronomical Clock, the Milena is certainly one of Prague's busier cafés, though sadly not among the best. Named after Franz Kafka's former girlfriend, the writer and political activist, it offers only average coffee, pastries and lunches, while service (particularly during the summer) is laboured.

Grand Hotel Evropa

Vaclavské náměstí 25, Praha 1, Tel: +420 224 215 387, Website: www.evropahotel.cz, Metro: Náměsti Republiky, Open: 9:30am-11pm daily, Cover charge may apply for live music
An impressive, albeit slightly faded example of a turn-of-the-20th-century coffee house, with a fine Art Nouveau interior. The Evropa's location on Wenceslas Square is reflected by suitably high prices, while service (especially during the summer) is distinctly sluggish. Cakes and pastries are quite good, but coffee tastes like a chicory based substitute.

Káva Káva Káva

Národní trída 37, Praha 1, Tel: +420 224 228 862, E-mail: kava@magicware.cz, Website: www.kava-coffee.cz, Metro: Národní třída, Open: 9am-10pm Mon-Fri; 9am-10pm Sat, Sun, Credit MC, V
As the closest thing to a Seattle Starbucks in Prague, Káva Káva Káva is a likeable, popular coffee joint with good cappuccino and expresso, plus a range of snacks and fledgling e-mail/Internet access via an old, (fairly) lower spec PC.

Kavarna Obecni dům

Námĕstí Republiky 5, Praha 1. Tel: +420 222 002 763, E-mail: kavarna.od@vysehrad2000.cz, Website: www.obecni-dum.cz and www.vysehrad2000.cz, Metro: Námĕstí Republiky, Open: 7:30am-11pm daily, AmEx, EC, MC, V
Housed in Prague's delightful Municipal House, the Art Nouveau Kavarna Obecni dům is, without doubt, the city's most memorable (and elegant) café. By no means the cheapest coffee in town, but with a setting this good who can argue?

Cafés Located in Nové Město

Café Imperial (Imperial Kavárná)

Na Poříčí 15, Praha 1, Tel: +420 222 316 012, E-mail: info@hotelimperial.cz, Website: www.hotelimperial.cz, Metro: Náměsti Republiky, Open: 9am-11pm daily, No credit cards
Another fine example of an Art Nouveau coffeehouse, set amidst the faded elegance of Na Poříčí's Hotel Imperial. Breakfast, lunch and dinner are all served, along with decent coffee and a good selection of pastries.

French Institute Café

Stepánská 35, Praha 1, Tel: +420 224 216 630, Metro: Muzeum, Open: 9am-6pm Mon-Fri, No credit cards
Swish, understated but very French, the Institute café offers good coffee and croissants, along with French papers and magazines. With an adjoining cinema and in-house art gallery too.

The Globe

Pštrossova 6, Praha 1, Tel/Fax: +420 224 934 203, E-mail: globe@globebookstore.cz, Website: www.globebookstore.cz, Metro: Národní třída/Karlovo náměsti, Open daily 10am-midnight
Upmarket (independent) bookstore which, as well as stocking over 10,000 titles, features a pleasant café with separate PC/laptop area. Eight Internet ready machines, with access costing 1.50 CZK per minute (laptop owners also pay an access charge, namely a flat rate of 800 CZK for 7 days, or 2250 CZK for 30 days).

Elsewhere in Prague...

Medúza

Belgická 17, Praha 2, Tel: +420 222 515 107, Website: www.meduza.cz, Metro: Náměsti Míru, Tram 11, Open: 10am-10pm daily
Cosy café with a friendly, laid back atmosphere, comfy old chairs, decent coffee, teas and light snacks. No credit cards, but prices are reasonable anyway.
