Prague - Disabled Access & Mobility, Embassy Information, Emergency Services and more...

Disabled Facilities, Access & Mobility in Prague

disabledAs with many major cities in Europe, facilities for disabled visitors to Prague are somewhat limited. Despite public transport being fast and efficient, buses and trams on most routes do not accommodate wheelchairs (with the exception of bus routes 1 and 3 which have introduced wheelchair friendly buses that run on working days). The situation is a little better on the metro, with around half of Prague's stations able to accommodate passengers in wheelchairs. Line C is the most accessible for disabled passengers as Hlavní nádraží and Nádraží Holešovice stations both have self-operating lifts (the latter of which also has a useful Transport Information Centre on the exit to Plynární Street). For further information visit: www.dp-praha.cz.

While an increasing number of the larger hotel chains offer a limited number of wheelchair accessible rooms, it's important to get as much information as you can from your travel agent. Be sure to ask hard questions like:

i) does 'accessible' mean that spaces, furniture and doors within a room have been thoughtfully designed? Or has the manager simply asked for grab handles to be fitted in the toilet/bathroom and nothing more?

ii) are all parts of the hotel i.e. restaurant/bar areas, saunas, solariums, swimming pools accessible to disabled guests?

iii) are lift doors wide enough to accommodate a wheelchair?

Many of Prague's museums and monuments are still not fully accessible to disabled visitors, although those scheduled for renovation in the near future will hopefully become wheelchair friendly. For the low-down on attractions that do offer disabled access contact the Prague Information Service.

For further details, the Prague Wheelchair Users Organisation (who publish an in-depth guide called Accessible Prague) can be contacted/visited at: Praszká organizace vozičkáŕů, Beneditská Staré Město, Praha 1, Tel: +420 224 827 210, Nearest metro: Náměstí Republiky.

Eating Out in Prague

Electric Current

electricPlugs in the Czech Republic are the standard continental type, using 220-volt current (50 cycles A/C). Visitors from the UK need only buy a two pin plug adapter to use British 240V electrical goods, whereas North American travellers with 110V appliances also need a current transformer. Modern equipment such as PC notebooks work equally well on both currents, although it's advisable to check operating instructions before travelling.
