With home improvement and gardening shows being all the rage on British TV nowadays, Londoners are spending ever greater amounts on interior decoration, swanky furniture and accessories. Here, we provide listings for some of London's best furniture, lifestyle, home improvement and gardening stores, with specific examples of the products they have to offer.

Artemide

106 Great Russell Street, WC1B 3NB, Tel: 020 7291 3853, Website: www.artemide.com, Tube: Tottenham Court Road, Show Map
With home improvement TV shows constantly harping on about the benefits of subtle indoor lighting, those in the market for desirable fixtures and fittings will almost certainly be impressed by Artemide's stylish (albeit expensive) range. Includes the ever-present Tizio lamp (a design icon), a retro sixties range and the new e-light for study/office areas.

The Back Shop

14 New Cavendish Street, W1G 8UW, Tel: 020 7935 9120/9148, Website: www.thebackshop.co.uk, Tube: Bond Street, Show Map
All manner of home and office products designed both to prevent back problems and to bring relief to those already suffering from back and neck complaints. An extensive range includes workstations, chairs, exercise equipment, beds and pillows, while prices are (on the whole) reasonable.

Bodo Sperlain

Unit 1.05, Oxo Tower Wharf, Barge House Street, SE1 9PH, Tel: 020 7633 9413, Website: www.bodosperlein.com, Tube: Blackfriars, Show Map
Perfect for the minimalist home, Bodo Sperlain's products simply ooze sophistication. As well as formal (white) tableware, the company offers a range of vases, serving bowls and cake stands. Also specializing in abstract lighting installations, (which are referred to as 'sculptures'), they're designed to be the talking point of any room. If you own a swanky loft-conversion in central London, then Bodo Sperlain is well-worth a visit.

Design Museum Shop

As well as being a rewarding stop on any tour of Shad Thames, the Design Museum also boasts a shop which features a well-chosen range of design classics. In addition, you'll find the very latest lines in stylish gadgets and accessories for the home. What's more you don't have to see the exhibition itself to gain entry.

Mathmos

96 Kingsland Road, London, E2 8DP, Tel: 01202 644600, Website: www.mathmos.co.uk, Tube: Old Street, Show Map
Probably the closest thing to a Lava-lamp heaven, Mathmos is a funky lighting shop on Old Street. As well as stocking the classic 'Astro' design, more modern offerings include fibre-optic lamps (which to our knowledge have never been in vogue), space projectors and utterly ridiculous lamp toppers to fit your lamp of choice. Undeniably kitsch, Mathmos is nonetheless great fun if you're in the market for highly stylised home lighting.

Along with a truly desirable standard collection, the company offers a bespoke furniture service making, plus a comprehensive accessory range.

A popular, albeit expensive way to bring atmosphere and interest to any room in your home, the Reel Poster Gallery does, as the name suggests, deal solely in original cinematic posters. Selections are dictated purely by aesthetic qualities, so if the artwork from your favourite movie wasn't up to scratch it won't be stocked. Works from Pacino and De Niro feature heavily as do Brando, Bogart and Hitchcock.

As well as offering a wide selection of climbers, roses, terracotta pots and garden furniture, the company also operates its own landscape design service. Prices are higher than garden centres further out of town, although for those who swear by the King's Road shopping experience it's a must.
