And, while it's undoubtedly cheaper to use Bharti's home based products, nothing beats a one to one consultation and the pampered luxury of personalised treatment.

Reasonable prices make for ideal Xmas/birthday presents.

Hairdressers

Fish

30 D'Arblay Street, W1F 8ER, Tel: 020 7494 2398, Website: www.fishweb.co.uk, Tube: Oxford Circus, Show Map
Popular Soho salon housed in what was formerly an old fishmongers. Relaxed surroundings and well-trained stylists enable Fish to offer a good mix of classic and fashion (unisex) cuts, as well as its own range of haircare products. Attracts celebrity clients, although prices are pretty reasonable for a cut and blow dry.

John Frieda

75 New Cavendish Street, W1M 7RB, Tel: 020 7636 1401, Website: www.johnfrieda.com, Tube: Great Portland Street, Show Map
Marylebone based salon owned by the celebrity hairdresser which offers top-notch cuts and an extensive range of haircare services/products. While a cut and blow dry costs upwards of £60, (with highlights from £100), the talent of Frieda's resident stylists is unquestioned. Surroundings and ambience are arguably more imposing than London's other big name salons, although results are sure to make an appointment here worthwhile. Of course, Frieda's famous Frizz-Ease Hair Serum is also available for those with less manageable hair.

Nicky Clarke

130 Mount Street, W1K 3NY, Tel: 020 7491 4700, Website: www.nickyclarke.co.uk, Tube: Bond Street, Show Map
Still a working hairdresser despite a grueling (but highly lucrative) schedule of TV and public appearances, Nicky Clarke remains the preferred stylist of many British fashion designers and celebrities. Not surprising then that an appointment with the man himself costs at least £300 (first consultation), although cuts by graduate stylists start from a more affordable £50. Central location near to Bond Street Tube is a boon, while booking (at least three weeks in advance) is essential.

Richard Ward

82 Duke of York Square, Sloane Street, SW3 4LY, Tel: 020 7730 1222, Website: www.richardward.co.uk, Tube: Sloane Square, Show Map
Celebrity hairdresser operating a suitably upmarket salon in Belgravia. Shampoo cut and blow dry from £25 rising to £100 (depending upon the stylist), with colouring from £65 and perms £70. Other services include facial/body treatments, manicures, pedicures and male grooming.

Toni & Guy

241 Brompton Road, Knightsbridge, SW3 2EP, Tel: 020 7591 0176, Website: www.toniandguy.co.uk, Tube: South Kensington, Show Map
Fortunately success and worldwide expansion have not blighted Tony & Guy's award-winning formula. As the country's favourite hairdressing chain, funky designer cuts (at relatively) reasonable prices ensure the company's salons are always chock-full. However, because of the sheer number of London branches, it's still fairly easy to make an appointment. And, if you're not sure about which cut to choose, Tony & Guy's website features a useful style guide (which you simply print-off and take with you to the salon).

Trevor Sorbie

27 Floral Street, WC2 9DP, Tel: 020 7379 6901, Website: www.trevorsorbie.com, Tube: Covent Garden, Show Map
Widely regarded as one of the most innovative (and likeable) hairdressers in the world, Trevor Sorbie's Covent Garden salon not only provides top-notch cuts, but excellent value for money too. Having trained under Vidal Sasson, Sorbie went on to create the famous 'wedge' cut and 'scrunch' drying technique. And, despite being one of the most in-demand stylists on earth, a cut and blow-dry with Trevor will only set you back around £200 (although waiting lists are very long). For a cut by one of his stylists, expect to pay between £50 and £74.50 with colour rising to approx. £120. Naturally, Sorbie's line of affordable (and excellent quality) hair care products are also stocked here.

Male Grooming

The Refinery

60 Brook Street, W1Y 1YB, Tel: 020 7409 2001, Website: www.the-refinery.com, Tube: Bond Street, Show Map
An award-winning grooming emporium that provides well-healed city gents with the very best body, skin and hair treatments. Located in the heart of Mayfair, The Refinery has a real 'boys club' atmosphere (indeed women are barred from entering the salon's inner sanctum). For those in a hurry, 15 minute 'pit stop' treatments include mini-facials, along with head, neck and shoulder massages, while traditional services include barbering, scalp treatment and shaves. The dry flotation tank is also a real hoot. Highly recommended if you have the funds at your disposal.

Sugar Shop

35 Southwick Street, London W2 1JQ, Tel: 020 7402 1400, Website: www.sugarshop.co.uk, Tube: Paddington, Show Map
The shop's name is actually derived from an ancient form of hair removal called sugaring. Apparently, it was (and we're taking their word for it here) practised by those rather clever chappies the Egyptians for over 2000 years. Basically, a mixture of sugar, lemon and water is applied to the skin, then removed by hand or with a cloth. And hey presto, even the likes of Pete Sampras can have hair free, baby soft skin in under an hour. Unfortunately, we're all too chicken to try it (for the time being at least).

Opticians

Eye to Eye

3A Montpelier Street, SW7 1EX, Tel: 020 7581 8828, Website: www.eyetoeyeopticians.co.uk, Tube: Knightsbridge, Show Map

Kirk Originals

29 Floral Street, WC2E 9DP, Tel: 020 7240 5055, Website: www.kirkoriginals.com, Tube: Covent Garden, Show Map
Retro designs and guaranteed exclusivity distinguish Kirk Originals from other London opticians. Trendy styling, hand-made acetate frames and a minimalist shop presence in Covent Garden ensure that prices are (on average) around £200 per pair.

Vision Express

104-106 Oxford Street, W1D 1LW, Tel: 020 7580 0911, Website: www.visionexpress.co.uk, Tube: Tottenham Court Road, Show Map
Well-known chain of opticians which offer a one-hour turnaround for orders placed in store. Along with a minimalist 'optical lab' vibe, Vision Express stock a wide and varied range of frames, neatly categorised as Basic, Optimum, Innovation and Designer (including those by Armani, Calvin Klein, DKNY, Dolce & Gabbana, Hugo Boss and Versace). Coupled with a wide-range of contact lenses and specialist spectacles, the company provides good value services, albeit in slightly soulless surroundings
