London Gatwick - Car Parking, Tube, Coach & Train
Travel
Gatwick, which is
London's second busiest airport, also has the honour of being the busiest single runway airport in the
world. Handling in excess of 31 million passengers per year, its location on the Surrey/Sussex border (some 30 miles outside of
the city) means you'll need to head back into the capital by train, coach or taxi.
Home to mainly charter, scheduled European or transatlantic flights, Gatwick
has two terminals: North and South, which are linked by a fast and frequent monorail service
(the journey between them takes only two minutes). Although not as busy as Heathrow, the airport
can become extremely crowded at Easter and during summer months (with subsequent
delays often attributed
to the airport having only one runway). Transport options to Gatwick Airport are
as follows:
Gatwick Airport Car Parking - if you plan to drive,
the airport is directly linked to the M23 motorway (junction 9) and to the A23 London-Brighton road.
Airport car
parking (both short-stay and long-stay) is available on-site, with companies such as Park
and Go, Tel: 0870 902 2333, providing discount rates for secure parking, plus meet and
greet services. All of the company's car parks offer free courtesy transfers to and from the
airport (24hrs a day), while directions to each facility are included on vouchers
sent by email, fax or post. In addition,
car rental is available via our own site (in association with Auto Europe).
As far as getting into London is concerned, the fastest, most reliable service
is the Gatwick Express.
Alternatively, regular train services are operated by Thameslink (to London Bridge,
King's Cross and Blackfriars) and Southern (to
London Victoria).
In terms of comfort, coach services into London (offered by
National Express) are comparable with the
Gatwick Express. However, as they are sometimes hindered by heavy traffic congestion at peak
times, you should allow at least two hours for your journey, especially if you're staying at a
Central London hotel.
In addition, Hotelink
offer a door to door airport shuttle service costing approx. £21.50 per adult. Travel from
Gatwick into Central London (London Victoria) is by Gatwick Express services. Upon arrival at Gatwick, you'll
be escorted to a dedicated carriage on the train and assisted with your luggage
and, upon arrival at London Victoria, customers are taken directly to a waiting bus above the
platform (again assisted with your luggage).
From there, the minibus only visits hotels required by passengers onboard, thereby saving unnecessary stops or delays.
For those staying overnight at Gatwick, Connexions
operate shuttle bus services to the Holiday Inn London Gatwick, Gatwick Manor
Hotel, Ibis Gatwick, Travelodge and Travel Inn Metro.
