Barbican Centre

Barbican Centre, Silk Street, EC2Y 8DS, Tel: 020 7638 8891, Website: www.barbican.org.uk, Tube: Barbican, Show Map
Not content with being a major art, music and film centre for London, the Barbican also boasts contemporary dance within its repertoire. Productions range from the challenging and inventive to the downright bizarre, with the centre's two theatres favouring unconventional choreography. The larger Barbican Theatre is the more comfortable setting, although the smaller Pit Theatre enjoys a greater degree of intimacy.

Chisenhale Dance Space

64-84 Chisendale Road, Bow, E3 5QZ, Tel: 020 8981 6617, Website: www.chisenhaledancespace.co.uk, Tube: Mile End/Bethnal Green, Show Map
Although slightly off the beaten track, the Chisenhale Dance Space is an important venue for contemporary dance in London. Student performances and workshops during the summer.

ICA

Nash House, The Mall, SW1Y 5AH, Tel: 020 7930 3647, Website: www.ica.org.uk, Tube: Charing Cross/Piccadilly Circus, Show Map
While film and art make up the lion's share of what's shown at the ICA, dance and movement based shows do get an occasional look in. A trendy venue which tends to attract fringe productions, British and international artists feature in equal measure.

London Coliseum

St Martin's Lane, WC2N 4ES, Tel: 020 7632 8300, Website: www.eno.org, Tube: Charing Cross/Leicester Square/Covent Garden, Show Map
Although principally used by the English National Opera (ENO), the Coliseum is also graced by the presence of the English National Ballet. Affordable ticket prices, coupled with lavish productions in December help to ensure it remains an important dance venue in London.

Riverside Studios

Crisp Road, Hammersmith, W6 9RL, Tel: 020 8237 1000, Website: www.riversidestudios.co.uk, Tube: Covent Garden, Show Map
Juggling between theatre, dance and performance art, the Riverside Studios feature innovative, varied programming and first-rate facilities. Consequently, it's held in high esteem by dance circles, with the venue regularly attracting acclaimed performers from the United Kingdom and abroad.

Royal Opera House

Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, WC2E 9DD, 020 7304 4000, Website: www.royaloperahouse.org, Tube: Covent Garden, Show Map
Home to the Royal Ballet company which, as well as staging sumptuous productions of Romeo and Juliet, Swan Lake and Giselle, features the talents of principles such as Alexandra Ansanelli and Carlos Acostsa. Although much of our review for the Royal Opera House (listed under opera) also applies to ballet performances at the venue, concessions have been made to make ticket prices more affordable (though the cheapest seats suffer from restricted views). That said, the splendour of both auditorium and ballet performances make for an unforgettable evening if you get the chance.

Sadler's Wells

Rosebery Avenue, Islington EC1R 4TN, Tel: 020 7863 8000, Website: www.sadlers-wells.com, Tube: Angel, Show Map
Comprising of three separate venues, Sadler's Wells puts on some of the best opera, dance and music theatre that London has to offer. The Sadler's Wells Theatre tends to favour US and British companies, including the long established (and highly respected) Rambert Dance Company, while the Peacock Theatre takes a more populist approach, with witty parodies of popular ballets as well as Asian and Far Eastern dance troops. Elsewhere, the smaller Lillian Baylis Studio Theatre caters mainly for younger audiences with discussions and workshops following many of the performances.

South Bank Centre

Belvedere Road, SE1 8XX, Tel: 020 7921 0600, Website: www.sbc.org.uk, Tube: Charing Cross, Show Map
While the South Bank's architecture may be dodgy, the dance performances held here are anything but. Attracting both domestic and overseas companies, shows take place in all three of the centre's venues (Royal Festival Hall, Queen Elizabeth Hall and Purcell Room). During the autumn the SBC sees the acclaimed 'Dance Umbrella' festival come to town, while in December famous ballets such as The Snow Maiden and Swan Lake are staged.

The Place

17 Duke's Road, Somers Town, WC1H 9PY, Tel: 020 7121 1000, Website: www.theplace.org.uk, Tube: Euston, Show Map
Contemporary dance venue which includes a dance video library, café and information centre.
