Having enjoyed somewhat of a
renaissance over the past ten years, most of London's "flea pit" cinemas are now long gone,
replaced instead by modern multiplex venues. And, while many are soulless and charge over the odds,
in terms of a true cinema experience, the state-of-the-art equipment and sound help ensure that
London's biggest theatres are among the best in Europe.
For those after the widest screens and thumping Dolby surround sound,
Leicester Square is arguably best place to head. Although ticket prices at both the Warner Village
and Odeon Leicester Square reflect their central location and popularity, each offer first-rate
screens and comfy seats.
London also has a thriving repertory and art house scene, providing an outlet
not only for classic cinema releases, but for those not managing to secure a major release.
Of course, with new or popular films it's important to make an advanced
booking for peak-time showings. For cinema listings, both Time out and the London
