Choosing Downtown or Las Vegas Strip Hotels

There's no doubt that, for most first-timers to Las Vegas, the lure of the Strip inevitably leads them to choose an upscale hotel here, rather than Downtown. The reasons are obvious. As well as being home to the glitziest accommodation and casinos in town, the Strip's state-of-the-art monorail whisks visitors up and down Sunset Boulevard all day long, while luxury shopping malls and first-rate restaurants combine to embody the lavish excesses that characterize Vegas. And then, when you add in the jaw-dropping attractions of the hotels themselves, the Strip provides a spectacle that can only be described as true "Vegas-ness".

If you're on a family holiday, then the MGM Grand Hotel - one of the world's biggest hotels - is a long-established favourite. Although its Grand Adventures themepark and Wizard of Oz memorabilia are now long gone, the property has 20 different eateries, along with the KA Cirque de Soleil and Lion Habitat. Another good choice is the Circus Circus Hotel and Casino which, as well as boasting the world's largest circus (along with America's largest indoor amusement park) offers a video-game arcade and carnival midway.

Alternatively, a family-friendly, modern choice is the Mandalay Bay Resort & Casino which offers a nice pool area, with beach, wave pool and lazy river, along with restaurants, bars, and clubs (including the House of Blues) for the grown-ups.

For the swankiest interiors, it's a close run thing between New York-New York Hotel & Casino, The Mirage, and The Venetian. New York-New York's exterior recreates the Manhattan skyline, while interior touches such as the "Village Eateries" food court, which is based on New York's Greenwich Village, create the feel and characteristics of the city. Equally impressive are The Mirage's tropical rainforest and coral-reef aquarium, while for a touch of Italy in the mojave desert, The Venetian's ambitious re-creation of Venice is truly breathtaking.

For gourmet dining, the elegant Bellagio Hotel & Casino has a wide-range of options, with branches of Le Cirque and Circo, plus restaurants by Michael Mina and Julian Serrano (Picasso). However, for a truly sumptuous resort hotel, head for the Four Seasons where superior service and pampering comes as standard. And, as a non-casino, it's perfect for those wanting to keep a safe distance from the tables and slots. Also well-regarded is THEhotel, another good example of a sophisticated and elegant non-casino property.

To sum up, the South Strip offers the convenience of covered walkways and/or the monorail to Excalibur, Luxor, Mandalay Bay, MGM Grand, New York-New York and Tropicana, while the central Strip offers Bally's, Bellagio, Caesars Palace, The Flamingo, Harrah's, The Mirage, Paris and The Venetian. Carry on up to the The North Strip and you'll find The Riviera, Sahara, Stardust and Circus Circus.

However, if you're worried about the Strip being too crowded or confining, then Downtown is the way to go. Easily traversed on foot (unlike the Strip) within just a few minutes you can reach 10 different casinos. Central to the action is Fremont Street and the Neonopolis entertainment/shopping complex. Here, the leading downtown casino and resort hotel is the Golden Nugget - a great all-round choice. Main Street Station, which evokes the early-20th-century atmosphere of San Francisco, and Four Queen's are also well-known and highly regarded alternatives.

Downtown, you'll also likely receive friendlier, faster service, while a 5-minute car ride is all it takes to reach the Strip. Or, if you're travelling by public transport, the bus ride to the Strip is a relatively short distance, providing you don't get stuck in traffic.

Off Strip, the Ritz-Carlton is the hotel of choice, with lovely decor, spacious rooms and elegant bathrooms. For a room with a view, high-floors at the Stratosphere Casino Hotel & Tower offer a chance to see Las Vegas' dramatic cityscape in a new light, as well as views further afield.

Hotels in Las Vegas - Finding a Great Deal

With a 90% occupancy rate for much of the year, and 36 million visitors annually, rooms sell out quickly in Las Vegas. This is especially true when there's a big convention in town (it's even known for Las Vegas to sell out completely on such occasions). Combine all this with long holiday weekends and popular sporting events and you can see why it's wise to book your Las Vegas hotel as far ahead as possible.
