To begin exploring our Las Vegas guide, choose from our main options (above left) or read further background about the city below.

City Overview - Introducing Las Vegas...

Bring your baggage and leave reality behind. That's how we'd sum up this amazing city. Whether it's the fabulously overblown skyline (complete with replica Statue of Liberty, a Sphinx and the pyramids) or the glorious sight of the Strip at night, be prepared for a sensory overload, a Disneyland for adults, a place where the jaw dropping sights and sounds of attractions like the Venetian's canal, Bellagio's water-fountain ballet or The Mirage's volcano, alter your perceptions to such an extent that, what used to be extraordinary, becomes the new norm. Welcome to Las Vegas!

The commercial lifeblood of Las Vegas is the Strip, a 3½-mile stretch of South Las Vegas Boulevard, which plays host to many of the city's most popular hotels and casinos (with the area between Four Seasons Drive and East Sahara Avenue being of particular interest). To see the Strip, hop aboard the Las Vegas Monorail, which runs from MGM Grand Station to Sahara Station in less than 14 minutes. Reaching speeds of up to 50mph, each stop provides a wealth of sightseeing opportunities, from the Tomb and Museum of King Tut (at the Luxor), to the Adventure Dome Themepark (at Sahara station) or the Star Trek Experience (at Las Vegas Hilton Hotel and Casino).

For thrill seekers, a trip to the 50-storey replica Eiffel Tower (courtesy of the Paris Las Vegas) is sure to delight, while amazing views of the cityscape can be had by ascending the Stratosphere Tower to its observation deck. Even hotels here offer an architectural (albeit often kitsch) experience of sorts, with the Luxor Pyramid being a fine example. Topped, by a hugely powerful 315,000-watt light beam, it's an exercise in overindulgence, but nevertheless a sight to behold.

Of course, most visitors come here for the gambling which, depending upon your budget, should keep you busy for several days. As Las Vegas really only wakes at lunchtime, with the day peaking between 11pm and midnight, you'll find that normal sleep patterns shift to accommodate your schedule (with many visitors rising at noon, before calling it a night a 3am-4am). It should be noted that Las Vegas is busiest at weekends when a huge number of California's residents roll in for a few days at the tables (for advice on casino etiquette, see our dedicated page).

If you need to take a break from the casinos and bright lights, then head for Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area, Mt. Charleston or, for non-gamblers, the quaint little town of Boulder City, the only town in Nevada where gambling remains illegal.

Fremont Street, the downtown area north of the Strip is, however, where it all began. As the site of numerous "firsts" in Las Vegas, including the site of the first paved street and home to the city's first traffic light, today it's home to the "Vegas Experience" the collective name for ten casinos which boast more than 10,000 slots, 60 restaurants, roaming street performers, Viva Vision (the world's biggest LED screen with 12 million lights) and the landmark Golden Nugget Hotel, which first opened its doors in 1946.

Whatever your reason for visiting Las Vegas, one thing is sure. Love it or loathe it, it's a remarkably exciting and unique vacation destination. Offering something for everyone, its world-class casinos, extravagant shows, varied nightclubs and awe-inspiring visitor attractions make it the entertainment capital of the world.
