26/02/2007 - Travelling Light

Diddy Eddy Since our website first went live in 1998, we've long advocated the benefits of travelling light. So much so that, when combined with online flight check-in (such as the scheme operated by British Airways), it's possible to mantain both your dignity and serenity at the airport by quickly dropping off bags and then heading straight for security at departures.

Of course, towards the end of last year, heightened restrictions on the size and amount of hand-luggage to be taken aboard aircraft, made it pretty well impossible for anyone taking a weekend break to avoid putting their belongings in the hold. However, the relaxation of this requirement, now makes it possible to take onboard one item of approximately 56cm x 45cm x 25cm (22in x 17.75in x 9.85in) in size.

Over the years, we've also managed to suss out many of the pitfalls associated with flying, to the point where we minimise the amount of time spent waiting for a flight or, if that's inevitable, in maximising productivity i.e. by using HotSpots for Internet work, as opposed to milling around in shops where normally you wouldn't purchasing anything.

However, the actual art of travelling light is more difficult to master, requiring Yodaesque mental strength to avoid packing three pullovers for a two night stay in Paris. And, as we don't pretend to have mastered it yet, despite years of trying, we found the folllowing resource at One Bag to be a thoroughly enjoyable read. So, if you haven't discovered the joys of bundling clothes, choosing a bag, or the secrets of travelling with chidren, then it's a great way to get started. Happy travelling!
