As one of Mexico's most popular resorts, Acapulco is home not only to
some amazing five-star hotels and beach front lodging, but breathtaking mountain views,
first-rate nightlife and wonderful coastal scenery. With accommodation choices to suit just about every price range and
budget, the town is generally regarded as more upscale than Cancun, yet still reasonably
priced. In total, more than 300 hotels offer in excess of 16,000 rooms, meaning that, even
during high season (December through April) it's possible to secure great deals providing you do your homework.
Having served as an international crossroads for most of its history,
Acapulco was claimed by the Spanish in the mid-16th century. Since then, despite the
familiar presence of earthquakes and attacks by pirates, it has flourished, eventually
being reborn as a playground for the rich and famous, including Hollywood stars. Today,
of course, travellers of all ages and backgrounds enjoy Acapulco's sandy beaches, along
with its fine restaurants and thriving party venues at night.
Among the town's most popular beaches, you'll find the following
hotels:
Playa Diamante and Playa
Revolcadero - starting with the town's most exclusive resorts, the fashionable Playa
Revolcadero area not only features a wonderful stretch of open beach (that's popular with
surfers and active pursuits enthusiasts), but also world-class lodging courtesy of The
Acapulco Princess, Mayan
Palace, Mayan
Sea Garden and Pierre
Marqués. If you're after a dose of thrills, then dune buggy racing, horse riding and
hang-gliding are all available or, if that sounds too strenuous,
simply pull up a beach side chair, order a cocktail and watch a glorious sunset across the
Pacific. Moreover, for golf lovers, the lure of the nearby majestic 7,209 yard, par 72, Tres Vidas course
will no doubt prove tempting. Alternatively, located in the Punta Diamante is The
Grand Mayan, an impressive resort complete with 12 tennis courts, an aqua park with slides and waterfalls, spa,
swimming pool, golf course and beach club. And, equally worthy in our opinion, is the Quinta Real Acapulco.
Puerto Marqués - just north of Playa
Revolcadero (and well-situated for
travel to both the bay and airport) you'll find the Puerto Marqués area. Although a
relatively late starter in terms of commercial development, this tranquil bay is now home
to the impressive Camino
Real Acapulco Diamante. Set amidst a steep mountainside overlooking the bay, the
secluded and highly popular resort boasts 157 rooms and suites, along with facilities that
include three swimming pools and two speciality restaurants. With an altogether different
feel to downtown Acapulco, this lush cove of natural beauty features calm waters, plenty of
rustic seafood restaurants and laid back, beachfront bars.
Pie de la Cuesta - located 6 miles NW of the historic center of
Acapulco, this picturesque area is a favourite will locals and overseas travellers alike,
often being described as the "Sunset Beach". Lined with small, good value hotels and restaurants,
the largest property here Parador
Del Sol, is an all-inclusive resort comprising of white villas set within well-tendered
gardens that border the Pacific on one side and a gentle, fresh water lagoon on the other.
Although strong currents and waves frequently rule out swimming, Pie de la Cuesta's tranquil
atmosphere and long, quiet beach, will certainly appeal to romantic couples.
Playa Caleta and Playa Caletilla - situated on the
south-western corner of Acapulco Bay (in the Peninsula de las Playas) you'll find one of the city's oldest
neighborhoods. As well as a wide-choice of seafood restaurants and plentiful tourist amenities,
the popular Hotel
Acamar and Boca
Chica are situated here. Often
referred to as the "Morning Beach", both resorts lie close to the coastal route to La
Quebrada, as well the road to Playa Condesa (heading towards the bay) and other popular beaches to the
east.
Playa Condesa - drawing a well-heeled cosmopolitan crowd,
Playa Condesa appeals to folk who enjoy the high-life, with an excellent choice of
trendy restaurants, bars and nightclubs. Overlooking the beach is the popular Fiesta
Americana Condesa, while popular water spots and activities here include parasailing, jet skiing
and snorkeling. As a bonus, many of the waterfront establishments serve patrons down on
the beach. A perfect invitation, in fact, to send a waiter scurrying through the sand for
your cocktail of choice.
La Zona Dorada - Acapulco's "Golden Zone" boasts
one of the most striking panorama's found anywhere in Mexico, with full-service lodging
that stretches from the Hyatt
Regency all the way to the Hotel Maris Acapulco.
Encompassing six beaches along the way, you'll find many of the town's best bars,
restaurants and clubs here, as well as the Club de Golf Acapulco and Parque Papagayo.
Other hotel choices include the Calinda
Beach, Crowne
Plaza and the budget Sands Acapulco.
