The Niedhart frescoes are the oldest non-religious wall paintings in Vienna and date back to the 14th century. Painted for wealthy Viennese merchant Michel Menschein, work is believed to have started in 1398. The frescoes recount scenes from the songs and poetry of Niedhart von Reuental, a court minstrel cum social commentator who lived during the first half of the 13th century.
