Church of the Jesuits (Jesuitenkirche)
Dr Ignaz-Seipel-Platz 1, A-1010 Wien, U-Bahn: Stubentor
The Jesuits played an important role in the religious life of Vienna and had a major influence in the Imperial Court, particularly during the Counter Reformation. They were originally invited to Vienna by Emperor Ferdinand I in 1551, while work started on the Church in 1627 and was completed in 1631. Embellishments to both the interior and façade were made at the beginning of the 18th century.
The lavish Baroque interior decoration, undertaken between 1703 and 1707 was the creation of the Italian artist Andrea Pozzo, who was himself a Jesuit lay brother.
Of particular note are the illusory trompe d’oeil effects (the most effective being the illusion of the ceiling dome). Also impressive, are the beautiful frescoes and the ornate high alter decorations. In our opinion, Vienna’s most beautiful church and a must see!
