Imperial Furniture Collection (Kaiserliches Hofmobiliendepot)
Andreasgasse, A-1070, Wien, Tel: 524 3357, Website: www.hofmobiliendepot.at, U-Bahn: Zieglergasse
All of the objects displayed here were, at one time or another, used to furnish the residences of the Imperial family through the ages. The responsibility for this task was given to the Court Furniture Depository, created by Empress Maria Theresa in 1747. It must have been a logistical nightmare to accomplish such a task as, by the end of the Austro-Hungarian monarchy, more than half a million pieces were listed on the inventory. Most items subsequently became the property of the Austrian State, while the decision to turn the Depository into a museum happened in 1924 (with the current premises being enlarged and re-modelled in 1998).
The museum is an antique lover’s delight as many items were produced by some of the finest craftsmen and artists within not only Vienna, but the monarchy and further abroad. Discount entry with a Vienna Card.
