Sigmund Freud Museum (Sigmund-Freud-Museum)

Berggasse 19, A-1090, Wien, Tel: 319 1596, Website: www.freud-museum.at, U-Bahn: Schottentor
The museum, which opened in 1971, is based in the house that was Freud’s home between 1891 and 1938. Born in Pribor, Moravia in 1858 his family moved to Vienna in 1860 after which time, having enrolled at Vienna University in 1873, he qualified as a doctor eight years later. It was during the 1880s that Freud became interested in hypnosis and, after moving to his new home on Bergasse, he carried on the work that would eventually lead him to become the "father of psychoanalysis". Indeed, his theories are still the basis for modern psychology.

With the rise of Fascism in Austria during the 1930s, Freud was left with no option but to flee and emigrated to London in 1938. However, his time there was to be short, for he died the following year on 23rd September. Of course, when leaving Austria, he took most of his possessions with him to London (where most remain today on display at 20 Maresfield Gardens in Hampstead).

The waiting room in the museum was carefully restored in the early 1990s and is much the same as it would have been while Freud lived and worked here. Visitors can also view his study and consulting room which contain numerous photographs and documents. Discount entry with a Vienna Card.
