The museum houses exhibits from archaeological excavations on the site of the ancient city of Ephesus in Western Turkey (where the Austrian Archaeological Institute has been working since 1895 with the blessing of the Turkish authorities). Ongoing excavations have yielded hundreds of fascinating and beautiful items, a good number of which are now on display here. Of particular note is the Parthian freize, a huge 40 metre commemoration of Lucius Verus’ and the Romans’ victory over the Parthians.
