The Dominicans first arrived in Vienna in 1226 at the invitation of Leopold VI. Their original church on this site was destroyed by the Turks in 1529, and it was not until 1631 that rebuilding work got underway. What emerged was a fine Baroque style church, with an interior rich in rococo decoration and ornate frescoes (painted by three talented artists over three centuries).

Initial decorations were started by the Swiss artist Carpoforo Tencala, added to by Mathias Rauchmüller from Germany and rounded off with those of local artist Franz Geyling. There are also a number of fine wall paintings and alter decorations.
