Church of St. Peter (Peterskirche)
Petersplatz 6, A-1010, Wien, U Bahn: Stephansplatz
Peterskirche is just off the Graben and is believed to have been built on the site of a church with origins dating back to Roman times. Construction of the church started in 1702, with the original design drawn up by the Italian architect Gabriele Montani. However, the famous Viennese architect Johann von Hildebrandt was also involved, resulting in a fine example of Baroque architecture.
The ornate front portal, designed by Andrea Altomonte, was added to the building between 1751 and 1753, while the interior decoration ranks as some of the finest in Vienna (with beautiful interior frescoes by Austrian artist Johann Rottmayr).
