These modern day botanical gardens have evolved from the "Hortus Botanicus Universitatis Vindobonensis", a pharmaceutical garden for plants used in medicine, which was founded by Empress Maria Theresa in 1754. Subsequently developed to include greenhouses (one of which is a tropical house) over 9000 types of plant and tree are cultivated here, including a number of endangered specimens. Of course, many plants are still used for research purposes by the University.
The gardens are planned so that plants are grouped together, with each type being seasonal (so you won’t find them all in bloom at the same time).
Of particular note is the Alpinium, a selection of plants from mountainous regions, both within Austria and further afield. You’ll also find displays of cacti, orchids and tropical plants, making it a worthwhile and thoroughly pleasant attraction (with May/June being the best time to visit).
