Taking inspiration from the European avant-garde movement, Raymond Jonson was a prolific modernist painter who, having also been a member of the University faculty, went on to found the influential Transcendental Painting Group (dealing with abstract and non-objective art) in 1938.

With a bequest that covers more than 2000 paintings, recurring themes in Jonson’s work include sound and light (no doubt due to his experiences whilst designing lighting, stage sets, costumes and graphics for the Chicago Little Theater) while his most famous works include the Cosmic Themes series, City Lights, Synthesis and Earth Rhythms.

Today, as well as Jonson’s own works, paintings by contemporaries and local students also feature within the pleasant surroundings of the purpose built 1950s ‘pueblo revival’ style gallery.
