Sightseeing in Prague

Prague is without doubt one of Europe’s jewels. As a city that plays host to a superb mix of architectural styles it has, at its heart, some of the most striking Gothic and Baroque monuments in Europe. Largely unspoiled by the ravages of time, Prague also emerged unscathed (physically at least) from a tumultuous 20th century, though the events of World War II and the subsequent Cold-War occupation by Soviet forces have left a lasting imprint on the Czech psyche.

Since 1989, and the fall of Communism in Central and Eastern Europe, millions of tourists have flocked to the Czech Republic. Seduced by the romantic charm of the city’s Old Town (and a wealth of sightseeing opportunities), Prague has become one of the world’s most popular city break destinations. Moreover, a significant number of non-Czech nationals - mainly from the US - have settled in the city, creating a sizeable ex-pat community and bringing about new cultural diversity in the process.

Prague today, as it has been over the centuries, is a vibrant ever-evolving city with a fine tradition for culture and the arts. Coupled with a thriving social scene (and first-rate beer) visitors to Prague will find much to enjoy here, both in terms of long-established traditions and events, but also familiar reminders of home.

Prague Cards

Prague (Matilda) Card - Somewhat confusingly, two competing companies offer (what each claim to be) the official Prague city card for tourists. The amount (and type) of reductions applied to museum and gallery entry depends upon the card chosen, as do the other benefits on offer, though each provides a useful three-day option of unlimited travel (with this card, known as Prague Matilda, you should specify the public transport add-on when purchasing).

Available for a basic price of 790 CZK for adults and 530 CZK for children and students, the card offers (for a duration of 3-days) admission to 55 museums, galleries and places of interest.

In addition, the option of a 72 hour travel pass for unlimited travel on the city’s transport system (metro, bus, tram and funicular) is also available. Although this increases the cost of a card by 330 CZK for adults, it’s arguably the best option if you intend to fully explore the city. For the transport option, the 72 hour period begins from the time you first validate your ticket on any of Prague’s four modes of transport.

Although during our visit we initially found it difficult to purchase this card, city centre branches of American Express seem to carry plentiful supplies. Moreover, you’ll find stocks at Prague Information Service offices (PIS for short) which are found at: Na Přikopě 20, Hlavní nádraží (Main Railway Station) and the Old Town Hall in Staré Město.

Prague Card and Prague Passport - Alternatively, the tourist card from Reklama s.r.o. (which is valid for a whole year) includes a Prague Passport which offers free transport for 3 (three) days on Prague’s public transport network, as well as free entry to a number of attractions and museums, plus discount coupons for selected venues.

Also included is a map of Prague (detailed traffic plan, indicating all tram and underground stops), a city guide booklet and special insurance for tourists visiting the Czech Republic from the Generali Group…buy now online >>
