The Albertina (Albertina)

An "extensive" collection of graphic art is perhaps an understatement, as the Albertina houses over 65,000 drawings and one million prints in total. Originally the brainchild of Duke Albert of Saxon Teschen - who was married to one of Maria Theresia’s daughters - his successors continued to expand the collection during the late 19th century.

However, following the fall of the Austro-Hungarian monarchy, it was eventually taken over by the State in 1920. Under official patronage, the Albertina has continued to grow and now includes important sketches by Da Vinci, Rembrandt, Rubens and Cezanne (among a host of well-known artists). Viennese artists also feature, with works by Gustav Klimt and Egon Schiele.
