Palace Gardens (Burggarten)
Main entrance on Burgring, A-1010, Wien, U-Bahn: Karlsplatz
The Burggarten was laid out between 1816 and 1819 at the behest of Emperor Franz I. As with the Volksgarten, the garden replaced the walled fortifications destroyed by the French during their occupation of the city in 1809.
More recently, the former Imperial Glass House has been restored (and now serves as a trendy café) while nearby you’ll also find the Butterfly House. With plenty of seating in the park, it makes for an ideal, tranquil spot in which to rest and have an ice-cream. Especially during hot sticky summer months!
