Natural History Museum (Naturhistorisches Museum)
Burgring 7, A-1010, Wien, Tel: 52 177, Website: www.nhm-wien.ac.at, U-Bahn: Volkstheater
Housed in the twin building to the Museum of Art and History (Kunsthistorishes Museum), the Natural History Museum was built at the behest of Emperor Franz Joseph to house an Imperial Collection started by Emperor Franz I. Divided into themed rooms, it was purpose built at the time to display the accumulated collections and first opened to the public in 1889.
As well as holding the largest collection of skulls in the world (over 43,000) there are mineralogical, geological, prehistoric, zoological and anthropological displays, along with a small children’s section. Labelling is done in German and while the sheer size and range of exhibits is breathtaking, we have to say it’s all rather on the stuffy side. Discount entry with a Vienna Card.
