Loos Haus
Michaelerplatz 3, A-1010, Wien, U-Bahn: Herrengasse
As you exit the Kaiser apartments in the Hofburg, head across Michaelerplatz to Kohlmarkt and take a look at the pastel green/marble building immediately on the left hand side.
Originally belonging to the tailoring company Goldman & Salatsch, the building, once dubbed "the monster" (by enraged critics) was built in 1911 by the celebrated Bohemian architect Adolf Loos. Loos had a great distaste for the neo-renaissance architecture of the period and opted for a more refined minimalist style.
To say the finished building initially went down like a lead balloon with the Viennese is an understatement. However, the passing of time has seen Loos reappraised, with the building (now a bank) making a vital contribution to the architectural style of the city.
