The works of art on display here were originally part of a private collection gathered by collector Rudolf Leopold. Over the years he amassed probably the most important collection of contemporary Austrian art in the country (if not the world). In all, it encompasses over 5200 paintings and drawings from the period between 1880 and 1950.

However, because of financial difficulties, the collection eventually became the property of the Austrian Government with artworks now fittingly displayed in a new home at the stunning Museumsquartier. Among the paintings on show are those by celebrated artists Egon Schiele, Gustav Klimt and Oskar Kokoschka (to name but a few).
