Karlskirche
Karlsplatz, A-1040, Wien, U Bahn: Karlsplatz
The magnificent Karlskirche was built during the reign of Karl VI, who dedicated the church in thanks for the end of the plague (which had claimed a high number of Vienna’s citizens during 1713).
Funds were collected from across the Empire to pay for the building works, which began in 1716. The design, which is by Johann Fischer von Erlach (and following his untimely death in 1723 continued by his son Joseph) took some 23 years to complete, in what is a very grandiose Baroque style.
