Haydn Memorial with Brahms Memorial Room
(Haydn-Gedenkstätte mit Brahms-Gedenkraum)

Haydengasse 19, A-1060, Wien, Tel: 596 1307, Website: www.wienmuseum.at, U-Bahn: Zieglergasse
The composer Josef Haydn bought this house in 1793 on his return from a trip to England. Before settling in Vienna, Haydn had spent many years at Fertőd and Kismarton (modern day Eisenstadt), the grand estates of the Hungarian Esterházy family, where he was effectively retained as the court’s musical director. Prince Miklós Esterházy was a great music lover and ensured that Haydn had a suitable environment in which to write and perform his compositions. Consequently, his work on the development of the symphony and string quartet was to have a great influence on both Mozart and Beethoven. Indeed, Beethoven was a pupil of his for a time. His output was prolific – among other works he composed 108 symphonies. Many of his later works were composed at this house including "The Creation" and "The Seasons". Haydn died here on 31st May 1809 just as Napoleon’s victorious army arrived in Vienna.

In all, the museum consists of six rooms with display items including sheet music, documents, portraits and other memorabilia.
