Harrach Palace (Palais Harrach)

The Palace, which took some 30 years to complete, was built by Count Ferdinand Harrach in 1699 (when he served as the Imperial Ambassador to France) to the designs of Italian architect Domenico Martinelli and Johann Lukas von Hildebrandt. Becoming an important venue on the Viennese social scene, Rüdiger von Starhemberg visited on a number of occasions, as did Prince Eugene of Savoy. And, though its exterior appearance altered in the late 19th century, the greatest upheaval to befall the palace occurred in 1944 when it was badly damaged during an air-raid. Today, following complete restoration in 1990, the building belongs to the Kunsthistoriches Museum and houses temporary art exhibitions all year round. Discount entry with a Vienna Card.
