Vienna Fire Department Museum
(Wiener Feuerwehrmuseum)
Am Hof 10, A-1010, Wien, Tel: 531 99 51-444 (by prior appointment only), Website: www.magwien.gv.at/feuerwehr/museum.htm, U-Bahn: Herrengasse
This small museum, on the first floor above Vienna’s central fire station, was founded back in 1901, although the move to their current premises took place in the 1980s. Covering the history of the city’s fire department (which dates back to 1686 and is one of the oldest in the world) the museum houses numerous models, some early horse drawn pumps, uniforms, photos and historical documents which detail the service’s illustrious past. Some motorized engines from the early 20th century are also on display, while a mock-up of the lookout post that used to be housed within the main spire of Stephansdom (and provided a perfect vantage point to spot fires) is also found here.
