Dorotheum

Dorotheergasse 17, A-1010, Wien, Tel: 515 600, Website: www.dorotheum.com, U Bahn: Stephansplatz (see Dorotheum Website for sale times/dates)
The Dorotheum is Vienna’s premier auction house, having started trading from this site in 1787 (though the current grand building dates only from 1901). With a name derived from the convent of the Dorothean Order (which once stood here) the company, which was founded as the "Versatz und Fragamtes zu Wien" in 1707 by Habsburg Emperor Joseph I was initially, in all but name, an upmarket pawn shop, though as time progressed auction activity grew.

Nowadays, it’s widely considered to be among Central Europe’s finest auction houses, with more than 600 sales taking place each year. Even occasional or first time buyers will find ample opportunity to browse for a bargain, though you’ll need to enquire about an export permit for most items!
