Street Names in Vienna
Vienna is divided into 23 separate districts. Post codes comprise of four digits i.e. 1090; the middle two representing the district - i.e. 09 is the 9th district. Divided into four different parts, the centre of Vienna is district 1 and encompasses the famous Ringstraße. Districts 3-9 lie between the ‘Ring’ and the ‘Gürtel’ (belt), while districts 1 and 2 (the latter of which includes Prater Park) are separated by the winding Donaukanal. To the west, north and south you’ll find districts 10 to 20, while two districts (one of which contains UNO-City) lie on the banks of the Neue Donau. Finally, district number 23 is situated south of downtown Vienna.
The city also has a fine array of street names to conjure with. Strasse or straße means street, while gasse is a lane. Prefix these with names like Mariahilfer(straße), Gumpendorfer(straße) and Grimmelshausen(gasse) and you’ll end up consulting your travel guide just to check out the funky street names!
