Using Vienna’s Postal Service
In Vienna (as with everywhere else in Austria) postal hours vary. However, typical opening hours are 8am-noon and 2pm-6pm Mon-Fri. Some main and station offices are also open at night, as well as at weekends and on public holidays. For a branch locator (you simply enter the area’s zip/postal code) visit: www.post.at.
Postal rates for sending mail outside Austria are as follows: "Priority" (fastest possible mailing/airmail) costs €1.30 for Europe and €2.05 worldwide (for letters up to 50g) while the cheaper "Non Priority" service costs €1.15 for Europe and €1.40 for the rest of the world. Standard letters up to 20g are mailed priority without any additional surcharges for €0.65 and €1.40 respectively. For domestic mail there’s no difference between "Priority" and "Non-Priority". The rate for standard letters and postcards (up to 20g) is €0.55. Rates for parcels weighing up to 2000g (2kg) are also listed on post.at.
‘Poste restante’ known as ‘Postlagernde Briefe’ in German, can be sent care of any post office in Vienna. Simply ask to have it addressed with your surname in capitals (underlined) and add the words Postamt, together with the post code, street name and town. It’s also helpful to cross sevens (continental style) just so everything ends up where it should!
Mail boxes are painted bright yellow, while red stripes indicate that they are also emptied on weekends and public holidays. Stamps are available at all post offices.
