Newspapers/Magazines in Vienna
International editions of English and North American papers, together with journals and listing booklets are widely available in Vienna. Most are readily found in major hotels, at train stations and newsstands/foreign language bookshops. So far as local newspapers are concerned, the best priced or free titles are:
Bazar - a popular tri-weekly (Tue, Thu, Sat) classifieds paper that simultaneously publishes listings on its website. Categories including shopping, property, cars and dating.
Der Kurier - right of centre daily with good national/foreign affairs coverage. Also features a highly polished (around-the-clock) web presence, with sport, horoscopes, weather and cinema listings.
Der Standard - Austria’s leading quality paper, with a good eye for financial/political coverage, including overseas news stories. Also carrying sections devoted to culture, sport and local life, the paper’s web presence is a typically swanky affair.
Die Presse - supporter of the Conservative People’s Party, Die Presse offers in-depth news coverage in a traditional, yet easy to read style. Excellent sports section, plus informative articles on e-business, culture and finance.
Neue Kronen Zeitung - the nation’s favourite tabloid, which enjoys a huge circulation both in Vienna and elsewhere. Likes to run stories about Jörg Haider, The Pope and national/international pop stars (particularly Michael Jackson). Good columnists, plenty of pretty girls and half-decent sports coverage also await readers.
Wiener Zeitung - the world’s oldest daily, having been founded in 1703. Probably closest to the Daily Telegraph in the UK, it makes even that look like a forward-thinking and progressive newspaper. However, it enjoys a loyal readership being particularly well-thought of by Vienna’s bureaucrats. Web presence is lousy though…
Wirtschaftsblatt - one of the first places to look for daily business and financial news. Everything you need to know about the DAX and ATX, plus tech stocks, IPOs, funds and e-business. The paper’s website, which is let-down only by annoying pop-ups, also features a useful "tops und flops" section for Austria’s best/worst performing stocks.
Format - sort of like an irreverent Time Magazine, Format is a weekly news digest chock full of topical news stories, features and slightly off-the-wall journalism.
News - sister publication to Format which features an even fluffier news format, gossip, showbiz news and risqué photos of pretty girls.
Profil - heavyweight weekly offering well-written features, good local/foreign news coverage and incisive political comment. Jörg Haider seems to feature regularly, as do historic accounts of the years leading up to WWII. Mutterings about EU/Brussels bureaucracy abound…
Falter - left-wing weekly with political comment, as well as arts, entertainment and culture listings. You’ll find plenty of social comment here, along with Vienna’s best source of information for knowing what’s on and where.
