Currency and Money in Vienna
From 1 January 2002, the euro replaced the schilling (ATS) as the country’s official currency. Abbreviated as EUR (and identified by the € symbol) the currency has also been adopted by 11 other EU Member States, meaning that foreign visitors (and citizens of those countries) can travel the Eurozone without having to convert currencies. Notes (bills) come in denominations of 5, 10, 20, 50, 100, 200, and 500 euro, with coins of 1, 2, 5, 10, 20, and 50 euro cents, and 1 and 2 euro denominations. The official exchange rate against the British pound, US dollar, Canadian dollar and other currencies can be found on the Internet at: www.xe.com.
