Airport Transfers to Central Vienna
Vienna International Airport (Flughafen Wien-Schwechat) is situated approximately 18km (11 miles) south-east of the city centre. Easily accessible by public transport, options include the new high-speed City Airport Train (CAT) - the most convenient transfer option for most travellers - along with frequent S-Bahn (rail), taxi and shuttle bus services. Another easy way into town from Vienna Airport is to book an airport transfer online with Talking Cities. Choose between a minibus, shuttle bus or private hire vehicle and avoid the hassle of having to arrange a connection upon arrival in Vienna.
City Airport Train - taking just 16 minutes to reach Wien-Mitte station’s "City Air Terminal" from the airport (with CAT trains running every 30 minutes) the return-leg of this fast, efficient service, also allows for check-in at Wien Mitte station if you’re flying with:
Austrian Airlines, Austrian Arrows, Air Berlin, Air Canada, Air New Zealand, ANA, Asiana Airlines, BMI, Lauda Air, LOT (Polish Airlines), Lufthansa, Mexicana, Niki, SAS (Scandinavian Airlines), Singapore Airlines, Spanair, Thai, United and Varig (note: due to heightened security measures, flights to US destinations continue to require check-in at Vienna International Airport).
The service, which costs €8 one-way and €15 return (children under 15 years of age who are accompanied by an adult travel free of charge) is also connected to the U-Bahn via the adjacent Wien-Mitte/Landstraße station. Trains run from 6.06am to 11.36pm (Airport to City Air Terminal) and from 5.37am to 11.07pm (City Air Terminal to Airport). For more details visit the City Airport Train website.
By Bus - white, red and yellow liveried "Vienna Airport Lines" coaches run between the airport and Schwedenplatz, along with services to/from Uno-City, to/from Westbahnhof and to/from Südbahnhof. Depending upon the route taken, buses run every 30 minutes from 5.30am-1pm daily. However, for specific times check out the handy "Vienna Airport Lines" PDF document on the viennaairport.com website. Tickets, which are purchased on the bus, are as follows: one-way adult ticket €6; round-trip ticket €11; children aged 6-15 years €3; children under 6 travel for free.
S-Bahn - the local Schnellbahn (S-Bahn) train service connects the airport to Wien-Mitte and Wien Nord railway stations. Running from just before 5am to 11:07pm (at intervals of 30 minutes) prices are comparable to one-way bus tickets. Transfers onto the U-Bahn metro system are possible from either terminus. To buy a ticket online, visit the ÖBB (Austrian railways) website at: fahrplan.oebb.at. Note: this is a slower service than Vienna’s new City Airport Train.
Taxis - head straight out of the arrivals hall from where you’ll find a plentiful supply. Fares, which are metred, cost around €30 to the city centre, although it should be noted that, as traffic can be particularly slow in rush-hour, it’s likely to be the least cost-effective route into town.
Car Hire - if you’re hiring a car, then well-known companies such as Avis, Hertz, Budget, Sixt and Thrifty all have a presence at the airport. Telephone numbers for each operator can be found at: viennaairport.com, while rentals can be made in advance via our website.
