The Dommayer coffeehouse, which lies just across from Schönbrunn Palace, has been a fixture of Viennese life since 1787. Indeed, it was here on 15 October 1844 that Johann Strauss (the younger) performed with his ensemble for the first time. Thoughtfully, this musical tradition has been maintained, with the café hosting concerts throughout the year on the first and third Saturdays of each month (between 2pm and 4pm). Weather permitting, concerts are also held in the café gardens during summer months (third Saturday of each month).
With a menu listing 20 different types of coffee, along with a well-baked selection of cakes and pastries, Dommayer is thoroughly likeable for its culinary prowess too. And, should you require something more substantial, the café also provides heartier fare which includes some main meals.
