Hungarians love computers and all things electronic. Not because they've suddenly been introduced to the world of and PCs and consumer audio/visual products, but simply due to a fascination with how they work (and more importantly how they can be modified or improved). In fact, most consumer electronics that you and I take for granted today were invented by Hungarians. The cathode ray tube (CRT), colour TV, microcomputer and Basic programming language were all Magyar creations. Indeed, the founder of Intel, András Gróf (Grove) also hails from Hungary. So there you have it - a short history lesson on how clever Hungarians are. Oh, and there are lots of nice electrical stores in Budapest nowadays too...

Cameras and Photo Processing

Soós Foto

V. József Attila u. 22, Tel: 317-2341, Website: www.soosfoto.hu, Open: Mon-Fri 9am-5pm, Sat 10am-1pm, Metro: M1, M2, M3 Deák tér
Conveniently located close to the main tourist area of Váci utca, this likeable photographic store stocks all manner of new and used equipment, as well as hard to get film stock and accessories.

Sooter's

V. Deák Ferenc utca 23, Tel: 267 2208, Website: www.sooters.hu, Open: Mon-Fri 9am-5pm, Sat-Sun 9am-4pm, Metro: M1 Vörösmarty tér
Reliable film developer, with a range of own brand films and cameras, plus compacts from top names such as Kodak and Canon. Operates two stores in Budapest.

Budapest Audio-Visual Shops

Media Markt

VI. Westend City Center, Váci út 1-3, Tel: 238 7555, Fax: 238 7556, Website: www.mediamarkt.hu, Open: Mon-Sat 10am-9pm, Sun 10am-7pm, Metro: M3 Nyugati pu.
All the latest gizmos and gadgets, including a good selection of wide-screen TVs, DVD players, digital cameras and mobile phones (which Hungarians seemingly upgrade, on a whim, for the very latest models). Burly security guards are there to stop dodgy youngsters pinching goods, although innocent customers - such as yours truly - may also be swiftly escorted off the premises (if you just happen to be after a battery for a video camera and enter said store with the camera in its case). Needless to say, we were not amused, especially as a purchase was in the offing.

Budapest Computer Shops

ACOMP

XIII. Róbert Károly krt. 68, Tel: 339 5647, 339 5648, Fax: 329 6459, Website: www.acomp.hu, Open: 9am-5pm daily, Metro: M1 Széchenyi fürdő
A well-run PC store in Pest's thirteenth district that offers an extensive range of good quality notebooks, sub-notebooks, desktops and tower systems. Memory, peripherals and storage also available.

Macropolis

VI. Teréz krt 11, Tel: 478 4070, Website: www.macropolis.hu, Open: Mon-Fri 10am-6pm, Metro: Oktogon
Along with a wide-selection of laptops from the likes of Sony, Dell, Toshiba and HP Compaq, Macropolis also stocks high-tech gadgets such as PDAs and in-car GPS units. Occasionally, we've found the store to be a bit pricey, though a downtown location close to Oktogon metro (on the yellow M1 line) is a boon.
