Below are listings for some of the very best
supermarkets and specialist food/drink shops in Budapest. Although some (such as Auchan below) are

happens to supply some of the best cakes and pastries in town! A second premises at Kossuth Lajos
utca 14-16 (337 6379) is the place to head for waitress service, while the Fény utca shop
(near to Moszkva tér) will box up purchases for you to take home.

Open: Mon-Sat 6am-10pm, Sun: 7am-8pm, Bus 40 to Sport u.
Located alongside the M1/M7 motorway at Budaörs, the French owned Auchan hypermarket is great
for those stopping off (by car) on the way to/from Budapest. Well laid out and with a huge choice
of goods, it can be compared (for those from England at least) to the hypermarkets of Calais.
Extended opening hours are a boon too, while there's also a petrol station next door. Very
good.
IX. Vasarcsarnok, Vámház krt, 1-3, Tel: 217 6067,
Metro: M3 Kálvin tér/Tram 47, 49, Open: Mon 10am-5pm,
Tue-Fri 7am-6pm, Sat 7am-1pm
Conveniently located in the basement of the Central Market Hall, Ázsia stocks a wide-range
of spices, speciality foods, herbs, vegetables and health foods. Although the name implies mainly
Asian foodstuffs, Italian, Greek and Mexican supplies can also be found here. Not cheap, but
well-worth a look if you're planning some large-scale international cooking!
Budapest Wine Society
I. Batthyány utca 59, E-mail: klub@bortarsasag.hu, Website: www.bortarsasag.hu, Open: Mon-Fri 10am-8pm,
Sat 10am-6pm, Metro: M2 Moszkva tér
Pleasant surroundings in which to sample local Hungarian wines. Over 100 in stock, including rare
and special vintages.
VI. Szív u. 32, Tel: 302 4039, Open: 11.30-midnight daily, Metro: M1 Kodály körönd
Not only a cracking French restaurant, but now a gourmet food shop too. Naturally the gallic
influence abounds, but Hungarian dishes (such as goose liver), specialities and local wines are
also stocked. Not cheap, but well-worth a visit.
Demmer's Teahouse (Teaház)
VI. Podmaniczky utca 14., Tel: 302 5674, E-mail: info@teazok.hu, Website: www.teazo.hu, Open: Mon-Fri 11am-9pm, Sun 1pm-9pm, Metro: M3 Nyugati pu.
Along with a small upstairs area where you can enjoy a nice cuppa, Demmer's Teahouse sells all
manner of Indian and Chinese teas, together with fruit varieties, English and Irish blends and more
unusual flavours such as bourbon vanilla and Scottish caramel. And, as Demmer's also stock tea
making paraphernalia, gift boxes, mugs/cups and books, you know you're in expert hands!
V. Marriott Hotel, Apaczai Csere Janos utca, 4, Tel: 266 7000 ext. 72221,
Metro: M1 Vörösmarty tér
Tucked away inside the luxurious five-star Marriott Hotel, the Budapest branch of Belgium's famous
chocolatier stocks a fine selection of pralines, caramels, creams and truffles. Of course, they're
not cheap, but then again when does such indulgent sin not cost you! Delicious.
Kaiser's Szupermarket
VIII. Blaha Lujza tér 1, Tel: 338 3791, Fax: 338 4716, Website: www.kaisers.hu, Open: Mon-Fri 7am-8pm, Sat
7am-3pm, Metro: M2 Blaha Lujza tér
Found within the Corvin Áruház (department store), this downtown Kaiser's supermarket
is an excellent place in which to stock up on essentials, fruit 'n' veg, wines, chocolate and lots,
lots more. Mercifully - for us at least - they also carry a good stock of túró rudis
in their dairy cabinets! Of course, with Kaiser's being a well-known supermarket chain in Hungary,
they have a number of stores dotted around the city. To find your nearest one, visit their store
locater at: www.kaisers.hu.
V. József Attila 12, Tel: 317 5919, Mon-Fri Open: 10am-6pm, Sat
10am-3pm, Metro: M1 Vörösmarty tér
Good vintage and non-vintage selection from the major wine growing regions of Hungary. Imported
wines too, although bottles are slightly pricey. The shop's own label reds are particularly good
value though.
Pick Brand Shop
V. Kossuth tér 9, Tel: 331 7783, Website: www.pick.hu, Opening hours to be confirmed, Metro: M2 Kossuth tér
As Hungary's favourite salami/sausage maker Pick operates several retail stores in both Szeged
(where the products are made) and Budapest. Although underrated when compared to both French and Italian
varieties, Pick's 130 year heritage has taught them a thing or two about making good salami.
Indeed, the company's winter salami (which is made from 100% pork with no artificial ingredients)
is a truly excellent product. With lots of other varieties on offer, plus gift packs and other
goodies, we wholly recommend that you visit.
Rana Center ABC
VII. Nefelejcs utca, 27-29, Tel: 352 2348, Open: Mon-Sat, 9am-11pm, Sun
10am-11pm, Metro: M2 Keleti pu., Bus 7
A great source for Middle Eastern foodstuffs, Rana offers an excellent selection of olives, feta
cheese, spices, beans (including fava, white and black-eyed) plus fresh lamb and sweets (such as
Turkish delight). Long opening hours too.
V. Parisi utca, 3, Tel: 317 3643, Website: www.szamos.hu, Open: 10am-8pm daily, Metro: M1
Vörösmarty tér
As wholesale suppliers of marzipan to confectioners all over Budapest, Szamos really know a thing
or two about creating this delicious almond flavoured paste. The company's tiny retail shop just
off Váci utca stocks a delicious range of chocolate covered sweets, fruits and toy
figurines, while in the summer, ice-cream (among the best in Budapest) is also sold here. Other
outlets located in the WestEnd Center, Mammut, Campona and Sugár shopping
centres.
Tesco Hipermarket
XV. Szentmihályi út 131 (Tesco Way 100), Tel: 419 4003, Website:
www.polus.com, Open 8am-8pm Mon-Fri, 10am-7pm
Sat-Sun, Shuttle bus from Metro: M2 Keleti pu.
Arguably the highlight of any trip to the Pólus Center, Tesco (the British supermarket
chain) has an excellent presence here which, as well as being well laid out, has top-notch meat and
cheese counters plus lots of ex-pat friendly goodies. Why is it though, that Tesco stores in
Eastern Europe offer much better quality (and fresher) produce than their UK counterparts?
T. Nagy Tamás Cheese Shop (Sajtüzlet)
V. Gerlóczy utca 3, Tel: 337 7014, Open Mon-Fri 9am-6pm, Sat 9am-1pm,
Metro: M1, M2, M3 Deák tér
Although precious few specialist cheese shops exist in Budapest, lovers of Italian, French and
British cheeses will no doubt find "Big Tom's" excellent range (and personal service) a real
delight. Recommended.
