"Formerly the Hotel Taverna, we used to
be fans of the property for two main reasons. First, the acclaimed in-house restaurant 'Gambrinus'
(once rated among the top 10 in Hungary) and second, the 'Zsolnay' café, an oasis of
calm which offered 100 types of cakes and a dozen coffee specialities.
However, the hotel's recent transition into a
Mercure property has seen both eateries close, replaced instead by the
Café Vu snack bar. And that's a real shame. However, extensive renovation to both
guest rooms and public areas has breathed new life into a once tired property. Of course,
it's identikit Mercure - which means you could be anywhere, but it's clean, tidy and
reasonable value.
Most importantly, if location is among your prime considerations for a
Budapest stay, then Mercure's Budapest City Center Hotel makes for an excellent choice. Located centrally along the popular pedestrianised shopping
district of Váci utca, the property is just a stone's throw away from the famous Gerbeaud
Café, the Danube embankment and the capital's most beautiful bridge the
Lánchíd. In fact, there's no finer location if you plan to start sightseeing/shopping
once you arrive"
