"A traditional and historic early 20th-century hotel set along the
busy crossroads of Kossuth Lajos u./Múzeum krt and leading to the city's Erzsébet
bridge.
Though a sombre, grey facade may give the impression of faded
and past glories, the Astoria has been renovated to a high standard internally
(last refurbishment 2006). Indeed, the property is a far cry from the many non-descript modern hotels in Budapest, being an interesting, well-situated and above all, affordable place to stay.
The "Astoria Café Mirror" is a wonderful example of the
Mittel-European coffeehouse
tradition, complete with Empire style interior decoration, fancy carpets, crystal chandeliers, glittering mirrors and stained glass
windows. More generally, corridors and public areas also reflect the historic nature of
the property.
The
hotel's trump card, however, is its location. As a perfect base from which to see many of
Pest's downtown sights, it's also just a 15 minute walk to cross the Danube's Elizabeth
Bridge into Buda, while the city's excellent metro system is also easily accessible
(station right outside hotel entrance).
In
summary, we have no hesitation in recommending the Astoria for a weekend city break,
particularly as room rates are reasonable throughout the year"
