Vienna Travel Guides, German Language/Phrase Books and Vienna/Austrian Maps
|
Recommended Vienna/Austrian Books:
|
|
Lonely Planet Guide 'Austria'
- contains an excellent guide to Vienna, as well as comprehensive coverage of
wider Austria (including ski resorts, Salzburg, Linz and other regions). The
'Facts for the Visitor' section is as comprehensive as they come, while colour
photos and clearly designed maps, make this guide a real winner!
|
|
DK Eyewitness Travel Guides 'Vienna' - "The
guide that shows you what others only tell you" is well-researched and includes area by area descriptions of the major sights,
plus a detailed section covering the history of the city. Excellent colour illustrations make this
series a favourite, with the Vienna version maintaining DK's
reputation for quality travel writing.

Top
Ten Vienna (Eyewitness Top Ten Travel Guides) - although not as comprehensive as the
fully fledged Eyewitness guide to Vienna (see above right), this publication from DK
serves as a useful, well-thought out mini-guide to the city. Perfect, in fact, for a weekend
break or short sightseeing tour in combination with other Austrian cities.
|
|
Blue Guide 'Vienna' by Nicholas T Parsons
- although not as widely available as other guides on Vienna, the
Blue Guide series easily offers the best historical and architectural information on the city.
By no means full of laughs, but a great travel companion all the same.

Time Out Guide 'Vienna' -
for the 2nd edition of this guide, we said that it was "not as informative as Lonely Planet's Austria/Vienna guides
on basic facts". Thankfully, a complete re-write has changed the situation for the
better, with this hugely enjoyable guide being strong on history, sights in Vienna, restaurants and
accommodation. Excellent.

|
Vienna,
Prague, Budapest (Cadogan Guides) - a great travel companion for anyone touring the
region, this combined guide for all three cities offers practical travel advice including
a pronunciation and language guide, explanations for local food/drink specialties, lists
of handpicked hotels, B & B's and budget options, plus detailed city maps.

Only In Vienna: A Guide to Hidden Corners, Little-known Places and Unusual Objects
- from the outset it's easy to gauge just how much care and attention to detail Duncan
J. D. Smith has put into crafting this excellent Vienna offering. Indeed, we'd go so far
as to say that it's one of the best travel guides we've read in
recent years. The city's sights are described here in detail, along with an excellent collection
of accompanying photographs. All told, Smith's writing brings to life a city brimming with culture and tradition,
with emphasis placed upon little known details about Vienna's major and more difficult to
find sights. UK only.

Frommer's
Vienna and the Danube Valley - often travellers explore the Austrian capital in
conjunction with day trips further afield. Here, Frommer's offer detailed and complete coverage of all
Vienna's highlights, with detailed reviews of the major sights, museums and galleries
(along with accommodation listings). With the inclusion of side trips to nearby Danube River towns and Lake Neusiedl resorts,
it's a well-written and thoroughly researched title which, when bought in conjunction
with a decent Vienna map, offers almost everything that a first-time visitor to Austria
would need.
