Recommended Las Vegas/US Books:

|
Unofficial
Guide To Las Vegas 2006 - probably the only guide you'll need for downtown Vegas, this
extremely well-researched title not only gives unbiased reviews of casinos, hotels and
restaurants (with each rated accordingly), but also has its very own conference calendar,
plus detailed information on lounge shows, headliner acts, nightlife and gambling
rules. Our only criticism - if you're after information on sights further afield, then it's
best read in conjunction with offerings from Frommer's or Fodor's.

|
Fodor's
Las Vegas 2006 - ideal for first-time visitors to Vegas, Fodor's Gold Guide offering
is jam packed with information, not only for sightseeing, shows and gambling once you
arrive, but also in planning your trip to Sin City. Updated annually, each guide relies
upon local experts who know the city inside-out. And, with options to suit all tastes and
budgets, it's one of the most accurate and easy-to-read companions to Vegas that
you'll find anywhere. Very good indeed.

Las
Vegas Weddings - if you're planning to tie the knot in Sin City, then this
publication, which gives the lowdown on saying "I do" Elvis style (no doubt
followed by a "thank you very much") also carries descriptions of the city's wedding chapels,
celebrity wedding anecdotes and a plethora of irreverent factoids about how to get hitched
in between playing the slots. You've been warned!
|
|
Las
Vegas for Dummies - a truly useful book which, as well as taking the pain out of
planning a trip to Nevada, provides expert advice on the places that will provide the best or most unique experiences to
first-time or occasional visitors. As well as exploring some of Vegas' neighborhoods and modes of transportation,
the book also takes in dining options for Las Vegas (from buffets to brunches), the city's attractions, entertainment,
shopping and recreational opportunities.

Cheap Eats in Vegas - written by a native of the city, this neatly produced little
book sets out the best places to pick up cheap meal deals including 99¢ breakfasts, $10 filet mignon, 99¢ shrimp
cocktails and 5¢ coffee. Indexed by price, location and availability (i.e. all day,
evening meals etc.), it's an inexpensive way to find a good quality meal at bargain prices.

Frommer's® Portable Las Vegas for Non-Gamblers
- perfect for those with children, this Las Vegas guide, which is specifically
designed for non-gamblers, sets out in detail the best of the city's nightlife, including outrageous
spectacles and glitzy shows. Opinionated, concise and accurate, you'll not only find exact
prices (to help plan a trip to your budget) but the book also lists visits off-the-beaten-track,
the best hotels and well-regarded restaurants.

Las
Vegas: Lonely Planet City Guides - striking the right balance between useful facts and
readability, LP's Las Vegas Guide is a dinky sized companion that contains detailed coverage of
the Strip's casinos, listings for where to stay and eat, Vegas' top tourist
attractions and the lowdown on designer shops, spas and entertainment (including headliner
acts).

|
The
Underground Guide to Las Vegas - if you're after a more left-of-field, altogether less
cheesy visit to Las Vegas, where you avoid the pitfalls of mediocre comedy acts, lukewarm
self-service buffets and dead-end casinos, then this book is for you! Giving you the
lowdown on the tastiest places to eat, the best clubs, local existential dive bars,
touring bands, thrift
stores and casinos with the best gambling odds, it's certainly a worthwhile read.

Casino
Games and Strategies - explaining in jargon-free terms the rules of Poker, Roulette, Baccarat,
Craps and Blackjack, this handy book also uses illustrations to explain basic strategies
and winning plays. Included are popular variations of each game, plus a special section
about online casinos. With knowledge being a prerequisite for a successful stint at the
tables, Casino Games also explains the mathematics of each game, as well as tips on bluffing and reading the opposition.

Gambling
102: The Best Strategies for All Casino Games - this excellent title, which is for
those with prior knowledge of table games, gives insight into the ways players can gain tiny advantages over the casino
by turning the odds marginally in their favor. Packing as much strategy about each game in as few pages as
possible, the book covers classics like Blackjack, Baccarat, Roulette, Craps, Keno, and
Video Poker, along with new casino games such as Casino War and Spanish 21.

Las
Vegas: An Unconventional History - as the title suggests, this book is a worthy take
on America's capital of civilized sin. Documenting the endlessly suprising history of
Vegas, it covers the city from a tourism
perspective, looks at the status of gambling in Nevada (including past mobster involvement),
details famous old venues - the vast majority of which have been demolished - explains its links
to the nuclear industry and gives the lowdown on the Rat Pack, whilst also looking at the city's future.

Leaving
Las Vegas - arguably the best film that's ever been made about Sin City, Mike
Figgis' 'Leaving Las Vegas' is a beautifully atmospheric, yet heart wrenching tale of two
people who, at the depths of their despair, fall in love. Serving also as
a warning to anyone tempted to overindulge in Vegas, Nicholas Cage's portrayal of an
alcoholic set on binge drinking himself to death amidst the city's bright
lights, is seriously
disturbing at times, although it also manages to convey just how precious and fragile life
really is. Essential Viewing.
